1983 Mitsubishi Galant GLX 2.3 turbo diesel from Finland

Summary:

Old japanese gem

Faults:

Overheating is the most critical problem the car had. Due to the engine's design and the use of a turbocharger, it's very sensitive to temperature. If the radiator is clogged or the water pump is worn out, the engine will overheat rapidly.

Over time and with high mileage, the turbocharger loses some pressure and may leak oil. Similarly, the diesel injection pump can become miscalibrated or suffer wear on its seals, causing an unstable idle, black smoke, or starting problems.

It's common for ball joints and suspension bushings to wear out, causing annoying noises when going over bumps and affecting the alignment.

Due to age, the rear brake cylinders tend to seize and the brake hoses crack. Because of this, I had to completely replace the brake system.

General Comments:

The car feels bigger inside than it looks outside. It's incredibly spacious, and the seats are very comfortable and soft.

It has all the features of a premium car, like a Mercedes, BMW, or Volvo from the '80s. It includes air conditioning, power steering, front and rear power windows, four-wheel disc brakes, and a sunroof. In addition, the heating is separate from the air conditioning, and there are different buttons for everything you need.

It's a pleasure to drive on any terrain you can imagine; very easy to maneuver, turn, and park. The typical noise of an old diesel engine is only noticeable when starting up; as the car picks up speed, there's no difference from a gasoline engine, and it consumes much less fuel.

Who said the Japanese couldn't make good diesel engines? At least in this car, the 2.3 Mitsubishi engine, besides being a mile-eater, is as reliable as any European diesel engine from the 80s; it's even faster and more agile. No problems in years, beyond the occasional sudden overheating. You just need to use good oil, and the engine will never give you any major issues. Fuel consumption is also lower than similar diesel cars from the 80s.

I owned it and enjoyed it for several years, replacing it with a newer car some time ago. I remember it fondly for all the joy it brought me.

A car that, besides having every luxury, is very cheap to maintain.
