1988 Nissan Pathfinder SE 3.0L V6 from North America

Summary:

Wish I had a brand new one; best car I've ever had, and probably ever will have

Faults:

The transmission has been replaced twice. This is a common problem, and can be prevented by installing an aftermarket transmission oil cooler.

The bushings in the rear control arms had to be replaced, but they were well due at 285k.

Rust is one of the biggest issues to deal with. Under the rear seat and the rear fender wells are the usual areas that rust attacks first.

General Comments:

For a V6, it has plenty of power.

I have been amazed at the technology that this relatively "old" car has.

The heater has always worked very well, and gets the cabin toasty in hardly no time.

Noise insulation is not abundant inside, and so there may be more road noise than other cars.

I enjoy this car, because it's rugged, but also has all of the "creature comforts" such as A/C, CD player etc..

1988 Nissan Pathfinder SE 3.0 litre V6 from North America

Summary:

You can't find a more reliable beater

Faults:

Fuel lines rusted out.

General Comments:

Super cheap reliable transportation, great 4x4.

Awesome little climbing vehicle, great on the off-road, not bad in the city, never lets me down, starts like it was new.

The rust might cost me in later years, but the engine is strong.

1988 Nissan Pathfinder SE 3.0 V6 from North America

Summary:

The pathfinder is very reliable; I have no complaints at all

Faults:

Power Windows stopped working at 210,000 miles.

Cruise Control stopped working at 235,000.

The door panel pins have broken off.

The door pin totally messed up, but a bolt fixed that.

The exhuast is a little busted.

General Comments:

The pathfinder has been very reliable.

I have completely dogged it out from sinking it in the mud and just not driving it like I should.

It was taken very good care of by the previous owner.

I haven't done the best job at that, but it runs like a champ and takes me anywhere I need it to go.

1988 Nissan Pathfinder XE 3.0 Liter from North America

Summary:

It is the most durable vehicle I've ever owned

Faults:

It has needed mainly minor odds and ends. The front differential went out due to operator ignorance. (My brother used four wheel drive in the rain. You are only supposed to engage four wheel drive when you have to.) The air conditioner no longer works, but it was aftermarket, so I can't blame Nissan.

General Comments:

It has 170,000 miles and pretty much runs like it did when I test drove it 17 years ago. It doesn't burn any oil and still has the original clutch.

1988 Nissan Pathfinder SE 3.0L from North America

Summary:

Freak of nature? or truly a well built truck!

Faults:

Driver's seat broke at 275000miles (I'm 6'4" 305lbs-muscular) replaced from junkyard, driver adjustable shock absorbers ceased functioning at 280,000, began rusting through body in two small areas at about 290,000. Eats through the 31" tires often.. something common with this year and model. Otherwise, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!

General Comments:

Purchased from my brother (original owner), who maintained it reasonably well. I maintained it less than reasonably well. It was a 3rd car and a mule for my needs. A very busy mule! Absolutely everything on this car functioned when I sold it..A/C, cruise control, 4WD, etc., etc. This truck had it's original engine, transmission, front & rear diffs, fuel pump, alternator, A/C compressor, fuel injection unit, etc., etc. Before I sold it, I took it for an emissions inspection and it failed! Worry, worry! But alas.. the SE and my master mechanic came through. He cleaned a few sensors, a few little adjustments.. it passed! As a bonus, the truck had gobs more power. All for $135.00. I sold it in 2002 with 305,000miles for $1400.00, I had paid my brother $1200.00 for it! I loved it so much, I bought a used 1996 Pathfinder as a 3rd vehicle. 85,000 miles on it so far, and counting!

1988 Nissan Pathfinder SE 3.0 gas from North America

Summary:

This is a well built truck that has the comforts of a car

Faults:

Replaced the a/c compressor and the expansion valve when the unit was first purchased.

Replaced 4 shocks, all 4 brakes and the rear brake cylinders.

Replaced the right side window regulator.

Replaced the radiator.

General Comments:

I researched the pathfinder prior to purchase. After operating this vehicle for over a year I have found it to be well built, and able to withstand some abuse. The vehicle drives better than my mustang on the highway and handles well off road. However, the mustang, even with a 5.0 engine gets better gas mileage than the pathfinder. This is a tough truck and yes I like it, so much that I just purchased a newer pathfinder. And before I purchased this truck I was searching for a blazer. (phew!!)
