I have close to 150k miles on the same model and it's running great so far. I've had to do regular maintenance stuff and replaced the tires and brake pads quite often, but nothing so serious taht I've had to drop off the vehicle for several days and consider purchasing another car. Overall it's a great little car for a cheap price.

1996 Nissan Sentra GXE 1.6L from North America

Summary:

Great

Faults:

Well, I have just gotten this car, so I haven't experienced any problems.

General Comments:

This car has a smooth ride, enjoyable. Gets very good gas mileage, about 27 per city. It is a great car for any new driver, because of the good fuel economy.

It has some trouble getting up hills, chugs a little. Handling could be better.

1996 Nissan Sentra GXE 1.6 from North America

Summary:

Statistically it sounds safe and reliable. However, there are some of them that were not meant to be

Faults:

Alternator went bad twice $400 each time.

Water pump been replaced 4 times $300 each time.

Rear brakes wear off too fast.

Oil started leaking in a distributer $500.

Other than that everything was fine.

General Comments:

I really liked this car. I don't know why the water pump went off 4 times and why the alternator stopped working twice. I live in California. The weather is very nice out here. I took care of my Nissan as it was humanly possible, but still I had problems with it. I don't know whether it were the mechanics who installed things improperly or whether it's the car. I think it was the car. I'm the second owner of the vehicle. I knew a person who sold me this car and he said that he didn't have any trouble with it. I guess it all depends on whether it was built to last or not. Good luck!

UPDATE:

135,000 The Car cannot pass the CA SMOG Exam. I changed the oxygen sensor $270 but it did not solve it. I need to change Catalytic converter (was told about $500).

Gonna sell this car!

In California the seller is legally responsible to ensure the car passes smog, so you'll have to eat the expense one way or another.

I totally agree. I'm closing in on 150k miles for this 1996 model, and I've had regular checkups and oil changes. besides that, nothing major has been repaired. the car is great and keeps on running. awesome piece of engineering.

I have had my 1996 Nissan Sentra GXE for three years now. It was my first car, it had taken some good beatings. It still runs like a gem. A few problems come up. But all easy fixes. But, with 200,000 miles on it, It's bound to start to have some problems! :)

1996 Nissan Sentra GXE from North America

Summary:

Cost efficient, reliable, and fun to drive small car

Faults:

Alternator died at 70,000 miles.

Interior ceiling starting to peel.

Nothing else - besides expected maintenance issues -like replacing tires, oil and air filters, etc.

General Comments:

If you are looking for a low cost car that is super reliable, I would recommend a Sentra to anyone. It's a great car for one or two people -would make a fantastic college car.

VERY reliable.

Handles well.

Engine is strained if carrying four people.

Cabin is comfortable for two -three to four people will feel cramped.

1996 Nissan Sentra GXE twin cam 16 V from North America

Summary:

Best car I have ever owned

Faults:

As long as I have had it, a battery.

General Comments:

This is the best car I have ever owned. I paid 600.00 for the car, it had 147,000 miles on it. I am now on 164,000 on the car has no problems. I had to put a battery in it. It runs great, little hesitation, but I can't complain. I own a Taurus and I have put an engine and transmission in it before 115,000. Head gaskets blew at 38,000 miles. So in all for 600.00 bucks the Nissan it's worth more to me that any car I own. I have never had a car that would go 325 miles on a tank of gas, with 164,000 miles on it.
