1992 Oldsmobile Silhouette from North America

A reliable vehicle, but far from the best

Had to replace front windshield from a hailstorm.

Tailgate needed a new latch. Light comes on saying gate Ajar, but it's closed all the way.

Sliding door handle inside broke and got replaced.

Driver's door hand from outside didn't work and heat to get replaced.

Rear heating/cooling system does not work. Works only in front.

Needs a new radiator. Having to put water in instead of anti freeze.

Windshield washer bag leaks.

Ignition switch used to work without key. Got locked in place and wouldn't move with key or screwdriver. Had to buy a new one.

Starter broke down in the middle of winter.

Tape player does not work. Previous owner had stuck coins in it and will not work with them all out.

Rear speakers are blown.

Sagging headliner.

The direction and temperature display keeps going out. Will work and go out a random times.

The resettable mileage counter will not go back to 0000. When pressed, it might change to 0900 or something similar.

General Comments:

Seats are very uncomfortable, especially the back ones.

Not much room in back seats.

Vehicle is very loud when driving from the fans.

Should have made another sliding door on driver's side.

1992 Oldsmobile Silhouette 3.5 from North America

I do not think I will be buying another Oldsmobile,

The water pump went out at 98000 miles, not bad for an original part.

Power window motor replaced.

Windshield wiper motor replaced around the same time.

Heater core went out at 97000 miles.

Back lock broke and have to replace just to change tail lights. $200.00.

Door handle on inside of slider broke. junkyard part or dealer part.

Outside door handles broke, need to replace them for it to pass saftey.

Roof paint chipping needs a new paint job.

Transmission went out at 132000 miles. $1700.00 to rebuild.

Passenger side door bolt broke off and has to welded back on.

General Comments:

A mechanic's dream car, with all the repairs that this Mini Van need as it gets older, a (back yard Do It Yourselfer would have a hard time fixing all the problems it has).

While replacing the old door handle on the passenger side the bolt that holds the door shut broke off. (faulty workmanship). Needs to be welded back on.

Good gas mileage, great family car, if one can afford all the repair costs after 100000 miles though.
