1986 Opel Commodore C sedan 3.0 petrol from South Africa

Summary:

Great machine made by GM/Opel

Faults:

The clutch finally broke at 150,000 km.

Rust on the rocker panels and roof. That's why the car was completely repainted.

Problems with the power steering, noises and squealing when turning; I didn't need to change the steering, but this was not a minor problem.

Oil leak. I fixed it by changing the oil earlier than recommended.

The engine is quite noisy when you go over 150-160 km/h, but it's not a serious problem. It's a car from the 80s.

Beyond that, to be honest, I don't recall any other significant problems with the car.

General Comments:

The car is beautiful, with a very good design both inside and out. Perhaps it doesn't have too many luxuries beyond what's necessary for a car of its class, but its mechanics are practically indestructible.

The engine is a 3.0 GM-Opel; mine is the African version of the Commodore, but the engine is known for being used in various places.

The point is, it's incredibly reliable. Its classic 80s mechanics where you only need to change the oil and it won't leave you stranded. The only downside is its high fuel consumption, but back then in South Africa, gasoline was cheaper, so it wasn't a problem. It is true that at high speeds it is somewhat noisy, but nothing unbearable, after all, very few people drive at more than 170 km/h, and even fewer in the 80s and 90s.

Inside it's huge; five people can travel in complete comfort (even six). The ride is excellent; it's a car for long journeys. It handles well, brakes well, has very soft and comfortable seats, and the air conditioning, in over 20 years of use and 330,000 km, never gave us a problem (and it was freezing cold).

In terms of comfort and convenience, and having driven other similar sedans (Granada, Sigma), this Opel was far superior.

A perfect car for enjoying with the family.
