1989 Opel Kadett Estate GL 1.6i 75HP from Serbia

Summary:

Performance for small amount of money

Faults:

Replaced fuel pump and air flow meter (MAF), because poor performance and economy.

On 290000 km- general repair of engine, it was very cheap not abov 350e...

Also needed new paint job and some new body work part, not so cheap 400e...

General Comments:

In general it is very thanks-full car, low cost of repairs and maintains, very good performance, mostly because it weight only 920 kg...

Because I like sport driving, I swapped my engine for 2.0 8v GSi engine, lowered springs for 55mm in front and 30mm behind (APEX Street Race Kit),place new anti-roll bar in front (EIBACH),and replaced front brakes from GSI model.

Then I modified engine with fully prohrom exhaust, with 0-approbation muffler, also I fitted K&N 75i kit, and finally replaced the mass air flow meter with one from BMW 325i 91' model.

Combination of all that producted engine power of 147 HP at 7200 rpm, all measured on Dyno Test.

Chassis didn't need much modification because the new engine is only 50 kg heavier then originally engine, and one MOMO strut-brace in front was enough.

402m street race (also called 1/4 mile) time is underneath 15 seconds.

1989 Opel Kadett 1.6i Power from Norway

Summary:

A decent bargain if no rust

Faults:

All the below happened at 160,000km.

Flexible petrol line, underneath car, degraded. Cheap to replace.

Shock absorbers failed. All needed replacing.

Timing belt failed.

Weakened brake lines due to rust. All needed replacing.

General Comments:

It's a pretty decent car. It starts well in all temperatures and runs well. It has good acceleration and is pretty roomy inside. Parts for replacement are relatively cheap. Fuel economy is also good.

Its down points are that it rusts badly around the wheel arches. This happens when the car becomes old, and can cost a lot to repair (especially in Norway), thus the car becomes fodder for the scrap heap.

1989 Opel Kadett LS 1.4i from Finland

Summary:

An excellent everyday car

Faults:

I've had only minor problems with the car.

Brakes have needed the most of my attention. They stick occassionally.

Sometimes the warning light for electricity is lit but there has never been a problem with electricity - in fact they work fine in any weather.

The doors and locks freeze when the temperature drops several centigrades to freezing (below zero) after rain. Greasing the mechanisms help.

General Comments:

Nice to drive.

Economic (normally 5,5 l/100 km on highway which beats even most more modern engines).

Extremely reliable all-around car. Starts always, even in -30 C temperature.

Roomy, especially the trunk.

Well designed cabin - plenty of places for small things, like mobile phone, parking disk, pens, etc.

1989 Opel Kadett California 1.4S from Portugal

Summary:

A very reliable and economic car, with a powerful engine

Faults:

The suspension is not very good, and it could have some better brakes.

General Comments:

A very nice car, a "combat" engine. If you treat it with care, it can run for over 300 000 km without any problems.

Steady car, good performance (max. speed of 195km/h), astonishing...

A must have, with all the extras...

I agree, my kadett 160GSE is standing on 396 000km and still running good, she doesn't even smoke.

1989 Opel Kadett LS 1.8i from Finland

Summary:

Nice car for summertime

Faults:

Rear brakes totally replaced at 230000 km.

Exhaust system replaced at 243000 km.

General Comments:

Reliable car in summertime.

Very economical car and cheap parts.

Nice performance, for a car of this type.

Very large trunk.

Soft, but still uncomfortable suspension.

Not a very good car at winter time. It starts usually well, but sometimes it is nearly impossible to get inside, because the doors and door locks freeze. I had to break a window once to get inside.
