1981 Peugeot 305 1.5 diesel from Belgium

Summary:

Endearing

Faults:

Oil leak.

Odometer.

Trunk lock.

Wheel bearings.

General Comments:

My first car... I learned to drive in it and I loved it!

Old when I got it and super slow (difficult to get it above 100 km/h), and in the end it started to make a noise like Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)... hence we started it calling "Dracul".

For a midsize car, it's surprisingly roomy with a good sized boot and a very comfortable suspension. Great smell inside and an enjoyable engine noise when driven slowly (up to 90 km/h). Gearbox is very forgiving... you could start the car in second or third and it would still go.

Replaced it with a Peugeot 405 diesel, which was objectively much better, but I never took to this one like my 305. I want another one!

1981 Peugeot 305 GR 1.3 from Greece

Summary:

I really like this car!!!

Faults:

Just the regular service and maintenance.

As long as I have it, everything works properly.

General Comments:

I always liked it's shape and I enjoyed the first drive with it.

The car performs very well in relation to it's age.

There is plenty of room for everyone.

The suspension is very comfortable!

I bought it as a second car for the chores of the family, but it proved to be a reliable partner capable even to travel, despite it's age!

I have decided to keep it and maintain it for as long as I can!

Within a year I have traveled more than 16.000 kilometers without being left on the side of the road.

I enjoy driving it!

My name is Rev. Andrew Y. Kadeghe from Tanzania, East Africa. Myself I own a 305 Peugeot 1983 make, it is old, but enjoyable. Though there are sometimes break-downs, but when Iam on the Road I find my Peugeot very comfortable!

1981 Peugeot 305 SR Estate 1.5 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Better car then most competitors... but far too expensive to run, and in the end proved unreliable.

Faults:

Rear radius arm bearings failed due to water ingress into the taper roller bearings through inadequate seals, fixed on later cars (identifiable by having 4 bolts per road wheel).

Engine overheated from new.

Cylinder head gasket failed twice.

Access to ignition distributer is very difficult.

Starter motor solenoid failed.

Engine eats spark plugs.

Serious tailgate rust, fixed on later cars by redesign.

General Comments:

Very good bodyshell assembly and paintwork quality.

Excellent transmission, though there is some gear whine.

Engine is at best, adequate for the job.

Cabin is very good in terms of design, materials and accessibility.

Grossly excessive prices charged for genuine OEM parts.
