1996 Peugeot 405 GTX TD 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Large family saloon that offers outstanding value and comfort

Faults:

Head gasket blew at 69,000 miles, this is very costly to repair.

Bulbs fail, intermittent fault on Peugeot.

Wish my car was known by Peugeot, no dealer has any record, yet car does appear to have many odd items.

General Comments:

Very quick for a TD, fun to drive.

Very comfortable on long haul trips, seats hold up to lots of abuse.

Huge boot.

Cabin is much nicer that the pre face-lift model.

Great heater in winter and Air Conditioning is a great boost in summer.

High spec for car.

I have owned an L reg(94) 405GTX turbo diesel estate since buying it in 96 with 80000 miles on the clock. It has now done 190000 miles and runs like a dream. I can drive all day without feeling tired or uncomfortable. Wonderful on motorways with plenty of power left at 70mph. Very economical and I can still get 700 miles from a 70 l tank. It has been very reliable although the water pump and a suspension bush went at 130000 miles, head gasket went at 150000 miles, radiator at 160000 miles, clutch at 180000 miles. Struggled to pass emissions a few times. Had a new handbrake cable too. Cabin heater wasn't very effective in the cold. All electric windows and sunroof are still fine and seats look like new! What a shame they don't still make them, as a lorry hit me on a round about and it is now a right off!!

Also had the STOP light coming on due to potential low coolant. It seemed almost randomly!

However it happened on inclines mostly which could be exacerbated with a trailer.

It was the coolant switch in the radiator. My rad had a slight leak and just needed topping up every 3000 miles (not worth replacing on a car a bought for 400GBP)

As a run around best car I've ever owned!

Having had the old 405 1.9d. I knew these beasts were reliable and resourceful (to the point people are now trying like crazy to get these old cars, because they want to run them on used cooking oil / used engine oil! Yes used engine oil!!! Blimey!)

Drove my 96 405 GTX TD estate home after winning it on ebay for £127, and wow was I surprised! It handled like a dream!

Picked up faster than I thought it would! (was expecting no response) LOLOL

Everything worked (except air con).

Even had a 6CD changer in boot (original radio with car!)

Just MOT'd it, and it needed a bush! Wow, this old Trooper has not missed a beat at all!

It's showing a few war scars, but I would say if you come across one, buy it! For your money you won't go wrong!

All its needed is 2 new tyres, a new battery and a end cap for injector returns (would not start in mornings after the cap split letting the derv siphon back to the tank).

As for the 210,000 miles it's done, it drives like it did new! Just as long as you remember to change the oil every 6k or they don't like it...

I'd have another any day!!!

I agree with your comments on 405 saloon GLX. Lovely to drive. This model was well equipped, with a willing engine.

1996 Peugeot 405 GLX TD Estate 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Some minor electrical faults, the rev counter stops working occasionally as does the temperature gauge.

The wheel trims are forever falling off, I don't bother to replace them any more.

General Comments:

Very well equipped and very comfortable. Good family wagon. Performance is pitiful below 2500 rpm but acceptable above.
