2007 Peugeot 407 SE 2.0 HDi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Not the best, but I like it

Faults:

Far too much to list. Let's just say this is not a reliable car. I bought used but it was looked after well.

Auto-box playing up was the most expensive thing to fix.

Oil leaks, engine misfires, etc.

On the plus side, the interior and exterior is holding up very well for age and mileage, better than most cars I have ever had! Very durable if not reliable.

General Comments:

For reasons I'll never understand myself, I quite like big French cars, but the problem is they are not as capable as the German giants (BMW, Audi, Mercedes) and not even up there with Ford or GM if I am being honest.

But don't get me wrong, this isn't a really bad car. Very nice to drive - smooth, comfortable, great looking inside and out. Solid feel of materials. Plush interior, feels more expensive than it is.

But the problems mechanically I had were far too frequent and expensive.

Oh and never get an automatic one of these - the 2.0 HDi engine has a nice turn of speed in any configuration, but normally you'd expect around 45 MPG or more from diesel. Well this automatic version takes 10 MPG off that figure. Yes, the best I have ever had is 35 MPG. Terrible for diesel. You might as well go for a petrol version. More reliable also.

I am keeping this 407 as a second car, it is not reliable enough to use everyday now. If you are thinking of buying one for yourself, don't - get the newer 508, they are much improved. The Lion didn't go from Strength to Strength in this Peugeot unfortunately ;)

2007 Peugeot 407 SW Sport 2.0 HDi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Comfortable, nice to drive, not that reliable and the 406 was better

Faults:

Wheel bearing, shocks, ABS sensors, oil leaks, electrics not functioning correctly, EGR valve, air con stopped working, etc.

General Comments:

SW is the estate version of the 407. Very large and spacious. Not bad looking.

Sport model has part leather, panoramic roof, fully loaded, great for long journeys.

2.0 HDi is OK performance wise, plus you get 45 - 48 mpg.

Pretty decent car, just a shame about its average reliability and overall quality. Many years ago before this car I had a company 406 that in all honesty was better. But the 407, if you get a looked after car, is still only good to keep as a second car, I couldn't rely on it as a daily driver; I traded it in 2018 for a Mondeo which has been excellent so far.

I thought the reliability of the 407 was at least on par with the 406. Looks are subjective, but I do agree the 406 was sharper, especially the coupe. 407 coupe looks kind of odd. But all these cars as saloons/estates make great family cars.

2007 Peugeot 407 Coupe SE 2.2 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fantastic value for money!

Faults:

Absolutely no problems so far, the car has been faultless.

General Comments:

Recently taken delivery of a 2.2 SE. Silver with fantastic red leather seats. I can't believe I only paid £16700 for this car brand new. Haggle hard, because the discounts are there.

The fit and finish are superb, helped no doubt by the seperate production line. The engine is very smooth and the car car extremely quiet. It's no rocket ship, but that's not why I bought it. I specified the sat nav/phone and overall it works great. It still suffers the small bug of the dash indicator thinking you drive on the right, but the main colour display is so good, it's not really a hassle. Equipment levels are massive and everything is working as advertised so far. I'm getting around 25mpg at the moment, but that's all town driving and it may improve a little as the engine loosens up.

I've received nothing, but complimentary comments about the car and am thoroughly enjoying every minute I spend in it. I can't imagine what else is available that is this good for the money and best of all, there isn't one parked in every car park. Can't recommend it enough.

Thank you for the review. Could you give us an update 11 years later. Some of us are second hand buyers and need to know what goes wrong over time.

Thanks.
