1985 Plymouth Caravelle LE review from North America
"Great first car, it lets young guys get speedy, but not too speedy"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Head gasket blown when bought.
Water pump.
Fuel filter.
O2 sensor.
Passenger wheel bearing and tie rod.
Map sensor.
In need of:
New muffler and exhaust line.
Catalytic converter.
Could use some new shocks & struts.
Could use some new motor mounts.
Speed distance sensor.
General comments?
I know it looks like a lot above, but for 250000 miles, this is pretty good. The car is roomy.
Handles good, but will handle better with the new shocks and struts.
Great plush red interior with a back bench and powered front bucket seats.
I don't like the tach, it has fuel gauge, speed gauge, turn signals of course, washer low alert, fuel low alert, open door/trunk/hood alert, and some idiot lights. I don't like idiot lights, I would rather have an RPM gauge, oil temperature, and the other goodies, but meh, what can you do?
A very nice woodgrain trim, with the luxury steering wheel.
The paint is pearl white crystal coat, where just now the clear coat is beginning to show wear.
Some mean looking hood louvers.
HUGE TRUNK! You can fit anything in there!
I bought it from a man who is selling it for his mother, who recently had her license revoked. I purchased it for $1000.
It's very fast with that 2.2 4 cylinder turbo, but has developed a miss, so I'm not even trying to push it right now. I've just had a stalling issue taken care of with the help of a new MAP sensor. People who have this car and have a problem with stalling, GET A NEW MAP SENSOR, it's the cause of the problem, and all 1980's Plymouth/Dodge/Chrysler owners agree that the MAP sensor is the main cause of this common problem. It needs to be replaced about every 3 years.
Similar cars are the Dodge 600 and the Chrysler Lebaron GTS, basically the same car with different sheet metal.
