I have a 2001 Sunfire and my sister had a 1998 Sunfire. Both have been AMAZING! We have have only one problem and it did occur in both. The clock on the radio stopped lighting up, but the radio information still does. Everything else has worked wonderfully!

I owned a 2000 manual trans Sunfire, bought in 2004, owned it for 4 almost 5 years and I never had one problem with it, not even a minor problem, and I mean nothing.

It was great on the highway and in town. I took it on two cross country road trips through the States and Canada, through desert heat and Winnipeg winters, and not one issue... till it caught fire and blew up (my fault - I passed out drunk with my foot on the gas and red lined it till it caught fire).

Any way, after that I bought a 2001 Sunfire and haven't had any problems thus far, except a whistle when I hit the 120 mark, but only if it's against the wind.

I have had my 2001 sunfire for 8 years. It's a great stater car. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Only had minor problems. I have replaced normal wear and tear items such as (brakes, water pump, fan belt, speakers) other than that I haven't had any major problems.

To original poster: What mechanic did you talk to? The motherboard rarely ever goes out in any Pontiac and every other brand; the motherboard is within the computer. If the motherboard goes, none of your electronics would work; the vehicle wouldn't even try to turn over. Take it to a different mechanic; that sounds like a safety switch or a relay, not the motherboard. And it is NOT a common occurrence to have the motherboard fry on Pontiac's. Whoever told you that is full of it!
