2005 Pontiac Vibe from North America

Summary:

Uncomfortable but reliable

Faults:

Around 40,000, the alternator went. It was covered under the dealer's warranty.

Around 100,000, the weather stripping on the driver's side front window began to come off of the door frame.

The paint on the preset buttons on the radio has worn off.

General Comments:

The car rides rough (it's at 141,000 miles now) and really always has.

The interior lighting sucks.

I personally find the steering wheel uncomfortable.

The engine is sluggish (even at new miles), but it is a small engine too.

The transmission started slipping around 100,000 miles.

The car gets around 33 miles/gallon, and hasn't decreased with age and wear.

It's annoying to drive (I don't recommend long distances with this car), however I really have nothing major to complain about. It has been a dependable, reliable car.

2005 Pontiac Vibe GT 2ZZ 1.8 liter from North America

Summary:

Delightful little gem of a rat-racer, disguised as a practical station wagon

Faults:

Nothing. Dead reliable. We had the front end aligned when we replaced the tires at 60K miles, otherwise the only time she's been touched by a wrench is when I change oil or rotate tires. She's never seen a repair shop.

General Comments:

She's named BuzzyBaby. No torque, but the Toyota 2ZZ engine winds like crazy, and there is a rush of power when the variable valve lift kicks in at 6200 rpm. The 6 speed really is a jewel, which is good, because performance is a function of RPM, not throttle position. Double-clutch, downshift a couple of gears, hammer it, and grin.

Think Mini Cooper with a nice ride, great headroom, serious interior space, and surprising ability off pavement.

Note: The driver's seat was serious uncomfortable, so I got into the seat back and disconnected the lowest spring. The seats are yummy now. Real comfort for 4 adults, even long distance.

This is a good American built, economy car with some nice amenities. Utility and reliability were main reasons for me buying this car.
