1988 Renault 11 GTX 1.7 from Bosnia and Herzegovina

Summary:

The most reliable ever!!!

Faults:

Nothing special.

Engine cooler - twice (yesterday was a second time), wheel bearings a few times, and rear axle (didn't break or come off - it was just squealing). I changed the toothed belt twice (because of mileage, nothing went wrong).

General Comments:

Great car. I bought it in a dump yard (mileage was reset and the seats were taken out). I drove 370000km with it and I'm still driving it!

I gave it the worst - I drove it 175km/h, drove 700 kilo's of stones on it, change oil when I got time, not when I need to, But it is driving and it never stopped!

1988 Renault 11 GTX 1.7 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

It's effectively been free motoring for the last 10 years

Faults:

The accelerator cable snapped at 40,000 miles.

The exhaust needed replaced after 60,000 miles and then again after 110,000.

Some minor sill welding was required after 18 years.

General Comments:

The car has been extremely reliable since day one.

In 20 years, it has never failed an MOT and has always started, irrespective of the weather.

The front seats were the best that Renault have come up with for any car.

1988 Renault 11 GTS 1.4 from Turkey

Summary:

Funny and Cheap

Faults:

I owned it about three years ago, and at first sight, there were some hatch problems. On the right rear wing, there was a rusty part. And the seats were uncomfortable and broken. I had the seats repaired.

At 152.000 km, I had a big accident and I had to renew almost all the mechanic parts except the engine.

At 172.000 km, the brake system fell down, I had it renewed.

At 167.000 km, the rubber part which is holding the transmission on the chassis is broken down, I renewed it.

There are still some rattles from the cabin.

And the thermostat of the radiator failed and I had it renewed.

General Comments:

This is the most lovely car I've ever driven.

When I first drove it, I opened the bonnet and looked for a 1.7 engine or etc. It is quicker than most 1.6 engines.

I drive it about 3 years and the general comment I can make about it is that it is a really economic and cheap in mending.

The spares can be found easily in my country. It makes some troubles, but all of them are easily provided.

I got 40.000 km and I really get astonished with its performance.

There is nothing wrong with the engine, if you have it controlled regularly, it won't give you any surprise service necessity.

It gives more than you expect.

After 4 years, I wanted to write a comment to my own survey. I sold my car last month and the distance was 236.000 kms. I had about 100.000 kilometers in seven years generally with convenience. I was having some troubles of course, but none of them were unsolvable. It was just the case my old car was really getting old, couldnt rely on this 20 years old car on motorways and didnt have time for an A to Z service.

The conclusion is, it was really a special car to me. If I had enough time for maintenance, I wouldn't have sold it.

1988 Renault 11 gtl 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A great alternative to a fiesta, nova and metro

Faults:

Early on when I first bought the car for £350, the clutch cable broke. This has since happened again.

Oil has been leaking out of somewhere for quiet a while. I seem to get through about 1 liter every 2 weeks.

The 11 failed it's M.O.T for having to high emissions, loose steering, rusty suspension mount. All fixed for £120.

The front electric passenger window has never worked since I bought the car.

General Comments:

The car is quiet quirky and you don't see many around.

The stadard equipment is OK, I don't think you would see sliding sunroof, electric windows, remote central locking, front fog lights, rear wash/wipe and aiwa stereo in an F reg fiesta?

The performance is good for a 1.4. I have seen an indicated 105mph and it feels unbreakable.

The poor speakers need to be replaced though.
