1980 Renault 14 TS 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A modern looking design for its time, let down by poor longevity

Faults:

Main problem was the carburettor becoming clogged on multiple occasions, resulting in the imobilisation of the vehicle. The gearstick clamp connecting to the gearbox also snapped.

The exhaust flange mounting bolts both sheared, resulting in the exhaust falling off.

Also, the electrics were extremely unreliable, and the car was very prone to rust.

General Comments:

This was my first car, so it was cheap and bought when it was already well past its best, which may have accounted for the many problems that I experienced - it developed a fault every 6 weeks or so, and broke down completely on a couple of occasions.

The handling on the bends was also poor, and I found that only I was able to drive the car without stalling it - everybody else who tried to get it to move stalled the engine literally after a few meters. Probably needing a knack to keeping it going without stalling was something else symptomatic of an aged vehicle.

On the plus side, it was comfortable, as far as I can remember, and was easy to mend without expensive tools. I should know, as I was working underneath it on a number of occasions.

Father had one of these back in the day. We had carburetor problems too, other than that it was pretty good for a 1970's/1980's car to be fair.

1977 Renault 14 TL 1.2 petrol from Netherlands

Summary:

When it was old and worn I bought the 1980 version of the same car, which had far less rust problems

Faults:

The car rusted badly

In moist weather the car sometimes had starting difficulties.

General Comments:

This car was a revolutionary design which was far roomier on the inside than it looked on the outside.

The 1.2 litre short stroke engine was built by Peugeot, and felt more powerfully than the figures (57hp) made to expect.

Although the suspension was extremely soft, the car was very well at fast cornering.

I wish you luck with your R14 - I have just bought one from 1980 and only the 3rd owner. I have bought it from 2nd owner who have only had it for 1300 km. The car has 188000 km on the counter, and is in resonbly state.

Would like to get in touch with other R14 owners who know where to get maintains sheets and spare-parts.

1977 Renault 14 TL 1.2 from Netherlands

Summary:

A modern and safe car from 1977

Faults:

Only normal wear and tear.

Until I crashed the car beyond repair under a lorry.

Only the radio was saved and used in the Renault 18 that replaced the 14.

General Comments:

A very modern looking car for its time.

Very comfortable too.

The safety cage saved my life in the crash that ended the life of the car. I did not have any injuries!

My father has still this car, We really love it.

It was too modern for its time. Its design is simple and at the same time, it was an overrefined style.
