1986 Renault 5 GTS Panache 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent first car, strongly recommended

Faults:

Clutch cable (Broke)

Accelerator cable (Broke)

Leaky sunroof (Common with most Renault's)

General Comments:

This was my first car and it was an ace first car.

Really easy to drive, didn't have any of the modern technology to spoil the cars driving ability.

This car was a limited edition it was the last of the 1986 models done out in black or metallic red.

It also had electric windows, sunroof, remote central locking and a twin choke weber carb which produced 72BHP, 12BHP over the standard model.

1986 Renault 5 TSE 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Does everything a modern car does for a tiny fraction of the cost

Faults:

My exhaust fell off.

My radiator thermostat censor failed.

The alternator failed (£70).

Electric window motor is worn out and operates very slowly on one side.

The rev counter and temperature gage on the dashboard sometimes give incorrect readings, but they tend to sort themselves out.

The car leaks oil on occasions.

Reversing light has never worked.

Some other very minor faults which have been easily fixed without cost.

General Comments:

The car has surprisingly quick acceleration with 0-60 in 10 seconds.

The seats are very comfortable, even over long distances (over four hours).

The driving position is the best I have yet experienced.

Nice motorway cruiser for an ancient super-mini, can keep up a constant 80mph+ for a long period of time.

Car suffers from body roll when cornering due to soft suspension, but has responsive steering.

The brakes are poor and the car skids easily in wet conditions.

Smooth gearbox and gear change.

Car has electric windows, remote central locking and front fog lights.

Very cheap insurance, and have only spent £450 on the car (which includes purchase cost).

1986 Renault 5 TSE 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

All in all, a good little all round car

Faults:

New brake pipes all round.

Wew top hose (£17 - dear).

New engine management system (£75).

New wheel bearings (only to the front).

New carb (£130).

3 sets of front discs.

About 3 exhaust systems.

Then just general wear and tear.

General Comments:

A handy little hatchback, fairly cheap to run.

Has got remote locking with electric windows and a leather covered steering wheel.

Has a top speed of 105-110 mph.

Parts are expensive, but can still be bought.

Slightly tinted windows.

The TSE is on a par with the GT model, having the same engine.

It's got a Weber double downdraught single choke carb, can be very greedy.

1986 Renault 5 GT Turbo Phase 1 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

You need to be a practical person

General Comments:

Renault 5 GT Turbo Phase 1.

Still one of the best hatches on the road. It will take more than a VR6 to beat it.

1986 Renault 5 TL 1.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

It doesn't like starting from cold in the wet. Rust poking through. Seat frame broke.

General Comments:

A good workhorse got me through 65k miles in 3 years.

Plastic trim fades and looks tatty and dated after a while and 1 litre engine lacks poke - a turbo would help!
