1989 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Performance bargain

Faults:

Head gasket.

General Comments:

I paid £400 for it and it will see off a BMW 328i. Bit unreliable but it was £400. Don't believe the horror stories, they just need looking after! Yellow paint, red leather! 5 spoke alloys, lowered to hell, 60 in 6.9 seconds, no crap!

1989 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

When I bought my car, the previous owner hadn't taken very good care of it.

I had to change the radiator myself, since it was overheating badly. I did a basic service myself, and overhauled the carburettor myself.

I've had the car 8 months now, and I thrash the bollocks off it at 6500rpm everyday, and so far nothing major has blown up; these engines can really take a hammering if you know how to look after them properly.

General Comments:

My spec is Jetex direct bolt on cone air filter, running with a larger 135 main jet (carburettor), and running on standard Garret T2 turbo with 18psi boost (end of the red on the turbo meter). Strapped and flowed intercooler, and Group 'N' spec clutch, with a Group 'A' dump valve.

General Comments:

How much fun can a car be?!

I have had mine for 5 months, and I cannot think of a car I would rather have (within reason!).

Like someone else said, if you're feeling down, just get in it and give it a blast... you'll soon be grinning like a madman!

This I can affirm !

1989 Renault 5 GT Turbo Phase 2 1.4 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing much apart from when the steering wheel snapped off and the car somersaulted across a kerb. Sub frame got bent, front bumper and foglight got mashed, wheel got bent and the steering wasn't right.

General Comments:

Fastest car in town. This car rocks. 35ml lowering springs on the front, a nightmare of a job to do the back, but it was worth it. Massive Impreza style scoop on the bonnet looks the business. 15" hoops with 45 series tyres and this machine was starting to look good. A full peco exhaust system with a 3"pipe and we were humming.

This car is amazing fun to drive. If you're feeling down just get in, give it the gun and you'll have a smile on your face at about 3500rpm. Let your friends drive it too. But don't sit in the passenger seat, let them take it on their own. You'll save yourself about 10 heart attacks man. Can't wait to get another one.

BYE BYE GTI!!!!

1989 Renault 5 GT Turbo Phase 2 1.8 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

When I modified the engine ( from 1.4 to 1.8 ) I broke the turbo after 20km.

General Comments:

Well I think everybody who got the GT turbo has to change their engine...

Now I have 220 bhp instead 120 and the speed is 255 km/h instead 200.

Do it and you'll appreciate it.

Bye.

Brilliant small car, leather seats and nearly 100 bhp in a non-turbo Renault 5.
