1999 Renault Espace RT-X 2.2 DT from UK and Ireland

Summary:

People who don't have them like 'em. People who do have them want to sell them

Faults:

Hydraulic clutch failed twice.

Gearbox link failed once

New clutch required

Airbag sensor failed

Poor fit to both Drivers and Passengers front doors.

General Comments:

Inside the cabin is very light and airy.

Lots of space except if 7 people are in the car - no luggage space.

Van like drive and van like noise.

Better the faster you go - motorway driving very good.

Van like drive and noise? Utter nonsense!

My wife is only 5 feet 4 and she loves driving it, and I only need to crank the stereo up when I want my ears to bleed (on my own of course!)

This is one of the most manoeuvrable cars I have ever driven.

I owned a 1999 Espace 2.0 16v. This was a dire car. It started out well, but after 36,000 miles and 3 years it fell to bits. Electrics computer failed - known fault it seems, but Renault still charged £600.00. Finally on 45,000 miles the head gasket began to go, it developed an internal oil leak (the list is too long). It took £2000 to get the heap of rubbish back on the road. I quickly sold it and bought a VW Touran (Great Car).

My advice - Don't BUY RENAULT - Badly built, unreliable and the dealers are expensive and unhelpful.

1999 Renault Espace RT-X 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

I like them

Faults:

Very bad year for us with this particular Espace.

1 Constant bad front tyre wear.

2 Power steering pump went at 57.000 miles

3 Clutch slave cylinder went month later

4 The biggest problem Can belt snapped at 61.200 miles returning from holiday in October very expensive repair.

5 Last year had a very serious incident where the exhaust blew right at the top of the U bend, and I could have lost the whole vehicle with my family inside, due to a fire however it gave no indication of blowing this caused an extensive burn in the floor panel Renault Dealer in Portsmouth had never seen any thing like it, tried on my insurance to have it repaired they refused stated it was wear & tear, Renault UK where US, they could help, but as a sign of good will they would give a 50% price reduction on my next service, fat lot of help that was.

General Comments:

The car is very comfortable to drive

Drives well & tows well.

1999 Renault Espace from Belgium

Summary:

Expensive fun

Faults:

High consumption (13 L / 100 km)

Gear synchronisation broke at 140000 km (high cost)

Have been told that cardan has to be replaced (high costs!)

1st gear NEVER worked properly (car stalls when not starting very carefully) (PS: Yes, with other cars I managed not to stall :-) )

General Comments:

Easy to drive car, which is fun to drive.

We used it often as a camper, as the back is big and great and flat, perfect to sleep in with 2 persons (if not giants, quod non).

Great when driving quickly: overtaking with 120 km / h. is easy!

Agree with all the negative and positive comments:

GREAT fun for a large family, can fit three bicycles in rear and two people! Sexy, cool appearances, BUT so expensive:

Clutch master cylinder twice, timing belt (£1200 of damage/repairs), dodgy alarm, fuel sender unit -all repairs costing an arm and a leg. Should I switch to a Ford Galaxy?
