1982 Rover - Austin Metro MG 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Ideal compromise between speed and economy

Faults:

Brakes pulled badly.

General Comments:

Decent little car, with far more guts than the 1.0 version.

Very few problems, sold it reluctantly for a bigger car - biggest mistake of my life!

1982 Rover - Austin Metro L 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Will get you there in the end

Faults:

Clutch master cylinder went.

Front tyres wore out quickly.

Trim and plastic handles etc. broke off easily.

Rust prone with some minor electrical niggles.

Poor damp starting.

General Comments:

Cheap and cheerful motoring most of the time - as long as it wasn't raining.

Generally cheap to run and repair, but odd parts could be expensive.

Engine lacks guts, but is OK for steady motoring.

1982 Rover - Austin Metro L 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great small car that I miss

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

Past all of its MOTs, always garaged, 65 mpg on average.

The only reason I got rid of the car was because someone crashed into the back of it when parked at side of road and it was written off.

Average of 50 MPG? Don't be silly.

1982 Rover - Austin Metro MG 1.3 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Reconditioned engine at 100,000 miles, new fuel pump at 70,000, new cylinder head and piston rings at 140,000.

Front drivers seat broke, Alternator bad but survived.

Hydraulic clutch damper failed every 30,000 but cheap to fix. Rear arm linkage, my fault for not greasing regularly, a must every 6,000 miles.

Only one clutch in 150,000 miles! New gearbox 120,000. All big items but very cheaply installed by reputable mechanics sourced from MG owners club.

General Comments:

Had this car ten years, noisy but a joy to drive. Very cheap to work on but boy do those front wings rust! Car very sadly missed and am seriously considering getting another especially as they are dirt cheap now.

Grin Factor 10/10
