1998 SAAB 9-5 2.0 LPT 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A nice big cruiser

Faults:

The digital display for the radio/clock only kinda works - apparently this is a well known fault. I tried to fix it based on info from various websites, the display now works properly when the car is cold, but starts losing bits when it heats up!

The front seats creak a bit.

General Comments:

This is a very comfortable car, especially so after a lowered and stiffened MR2 Turbo.

The auto climate control works well and does not seem to be too heavy on petrol consumption.

Plenty of space in the boot.

1998 SAAB 9-5 S 2.3 turbo from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing, except it goes through front tyres pretty quickly.

General Comments:

I had a Saab Troll upgrade for the engine - superb. It now has 238bhp. The car is of a brilliant build quality and feels like it is going to last forever. I do like the colour it is in (Cosmic blue).

We are so pleased with the 9-5 we have bought another one, this time the estate - and it's just as impressive!!!

People prefer my car to their BMW 5's and MERC E's.

Stated that he'd upgraded the power to 238 BHP, but then complained about tyre wear from this front wheel drive car! What did he expect? He's obviously been using all that extra power - less throttle = less tear wear.

I don't think that this is really a valid comment to the 9-5 range in general, any front wheel drive car will eat front tyres if you drive it hard.

Ah OK, I am considering buying a saab next year, thankyou!

1998 SAAB 9-5 LPT 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Climate control goes into calibrate mode unpredicatably, then sorts itself out. Service theft alarm caption appears at random.

Whine in second gear when cold.

General Comments:

My second 9-5. Faults will be brought to dealer's attention at first service.

Superb comfort, good ride quality. Manual gearbox one of the best I've experienced (apart from whine in second gear from cold - hopefully warranty will sort this out) Impressively quiet. Economical for large car. Everyone loves dashboard layout for its ease of use, clarity and outstanding ergonomics. Headlights are powerful and have excellent illumination pattern. Cloth upholstery appears durable. Most annoying features: Bleeps to remind you to belt up (can be turned off by dealer). Windows autoopen, but no autoclose function. Best features: Cup holder, comfort, ride, dashboard. Climate control is excellent also (apart from minor niggle with calibrate mode).

Impressive cruiser - I recommend it to anyone.
