2008 Scion xD from North America

Summary:

Many things have gone wrong with the car, but other than that it has been fine

Faults:

Over $3,000 worth of various repairs.

The exterior paint scratches easily.

General Comments:

Very poor exterior paint. It scratches easily.

Handles well, not great.

Has no go-power, but it has a small engine so it's understandable.

Good on gas after it reached the 15,000 mile mark.

Uncomfortable seating.

Decent amount of interior space.

2009 Scion xD Stock from North America

Summary:

Great value for the money

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Bought this car to replace an '04 Vibe that got wrecked (it was a GREAT car, BTW). Our xD came bone stock with the manual transmission.

For the money, it's hard to beat. The styling is nice, it's practical, great on gas, and is nicely screwed together.

It *is* an inexpensive car though, and the cost cutting can be seen if you look close enough. For example, there's only a fixed interval wiper for the front wipers, and no interval wiper at all for the tiny back wiper (just on or off). The Bridgestone tires it comes with are horrible... they were replaced the 2nd day we had the car (I had some nice Pirellis left over from the Vibe, which fit on the xD rims and all).

The clutch is a little difficult to modulate (much like the one on my Saturn SL2... kind of an "on-or-off" clutch). The shifter is reasonably smooth.

Seating position is quite high (almost uncomfortably so), and there's no height adjustment for the seat. I'm 6'0" tall, and find that leaning the seat back a notch or two helps a lot.

Controls are laid out well, and the sound system is nice (though a little confusing to use at first).

2008 Scion xD 1.8 vvti from North America

Summary:

A practical and unique ride

Faults:

So far I've had no problems with the car.

General Comments:

The XD has proven itself to be a great replacement for the 96 GEO Metro I owned previously. I'm getting the same mileage as the Metro, but I don't have to downshift the XD when I pull hills on the highway.

It is a difficult clutch to drive, and I've owned and driven several. The clutch starts grabbing the instant you start to release the pedal. I would suggest getting the short shifter to anybody wanting the manual transmission.

The interior has several neat features and the standard model has all power the features.

I'm waiting to see how well it gets around in the Iowa winters. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it'll do well!

2008 Scion xD 1.8 VVT-i from North America

Summary:

Good car for the money, we love it so far!

Faults:

So far nothing has gone wrong with the car.

General Comments:

The seats are slightly uncomfortable for me on long trips, but my girlfriend (who is the owner of the car) finds the seats very comfortable.

The car handles well, but with the auto trans. it's a bit sluggish.

It gets great gas mileage, about 36-38mpg on the highway and 26-28mpg in town.

Overall a good solid car for the money.

One design flaw with the car is that it has very large blind spots for a car this size.

2008 Scion xD 1.8 liter 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Innovative small cars with unnecessary flaws

Faults:

No reliability problems at this point.

General Comments:

I recently spent an hour driving a 2008 Scion xD.

Pros:

Quiet interior, attractive and innovative design - doesn't look like every other car on the street.

Pleasant handling, excellent stereo - aux/iPod controls, snappy engine.

More than likely reliable with high reliability, roomy and flexible interior.

Cons:

Almost impossible to find a comfortable seating position for the driver - if my legs are comfortable, my arms are too far from the steering wheel, and if my arms are close enough to the steering wheel, my legs are cramped.

Serious blind spots behind the driver - seems unnecessary in a car this size.

Ride is unnecessarily harsh; throttle is too much like a toggle switch - either all on or all off, which forces lurching takeoffs.
