1982 Skoda 105L from Bulgaria


Cheap is not always very bad


Well, that's a family car and we have it since new. Nice looking while couple years old, then all kinds of problems : it will not start if it's too cold (below -20),burns oil and what ever you can think off. The car needs to be rebuilt at 80 000 km which seems to be really funny compared to the Nissan 240sx that I have now with about 170 000 miles on it.

General Comments:

After all, I can't sell the car because I love it, rides very smooth, handles great when it runs, but you need ear plugs for long trips if don't wanna get deaf. Seats are very comfortable, but very small trunk space. Rust, hell yeah, after twenty years you could run the car like the Flintstones, matters NOT what you do to keep the rust away. Does not turn on snow, but it's like a small tank during the rest of the year, matters not if you are on or Off road. BUT the car is still on the road after 22 years and who knows how many kilometers :)

1987 Skoda 105L L 1.0 cc from Netherlands


Not as bad as was always suggested


The previous owner maintained his car rather well, and changed for instance shock absorbers and brake parts. The car was therefore in a technically good condition when I bought it.

I only had to improve the seats with some covers and did some extra finishing touches on the in- and outside of the car.

The car is although sensitive to small and sometimes irritating problems. For instance electrical problems, door-hinges, lack of interior quality and above all slow starting procedure during the mornings.

General Comments:

The car offers a good driving position for tall people (6 ft. 6).

Steering is extremely easy and brakes are quick and reliable.

Although relatively well sold in the Netherlands, the car is now very rare on the road. It attracts a lot of attention from other people on the streets.

The design, and features like the rear-engine and front luggage space, makes most people's heads turn.

The car is easy to maintain and repairs are cheap and simply to do. Corrosion is still almost undetectable.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

1989 Skoda 105L Super 1.0 from Finland


A cheap and bad car


Front door lock jammed.

Driver door is very hard to open.

Rear door handle fell off after lock jammed open.

Trunk doesn't open without violence.

The hood doesn't stay open.

Door locks froze in the winter, the doors couldn't be closed.

Windscreen washer failed completely.

The driver's headrest fell off.

A side mirror broke with no reason.

The headlights died.

The doors freeze open in the winter.

The brakes shake.

Handbrake broke down.

The engine spills and burns lots of oil.

The engine jammed completely in the winter. (Well, it was -30 degrees.)

Incredibly huge gaping rust holes all over the car, despite of repainting, welding etc.

The whole rear end of the car deformed completely in a 5 km/h crash.

General Comments:

The car has terribly slow acceleration due to its small engine, and high speed handling is awful (especially in the winter) because of the swing axle rear suspension and rear engine.

The steering is light and very accurate, but the car has a bigger turning circle than a Volvo 244.

The interior is OK: seats are rather comfortable and easy to adjust, and the heater is very good. However, the soundproofing is minimal: the noise level at 80 km/h is nearly deafening. I had to actually use earplugs when driving on the highway.

The body panels are so thin that you can easily dent them by just pressing them with your finger. The doors rust so quickly, you can nearly see the metal flaking off.

Anyway, the car cost only 300 euro when I bought it, and the previous owner had just taken it to the inspection after spending over 200 euro in renovations, so it was a real bargain for the price. I still do not recommend a Skoda 105 for serious use, you never know what will break down next.

After driving 1000 kilometers since submitting the post, the whole rear wheel (the brake drum and the wheel) fell off while I was driving at 100 km/h. The car slid on the road for 200 meters shooting sparks everywhere, before it finally stopped. The reason for the fault was very simple: the very thin metal pin holding the driveshaft bolt in place snapped, and the bolt opened in just a couple of seconds, letting the entire wheel assembly to fall off.

Problem with rear wheel is well known. It was caused during construction in some years. The most of other problems described in review should be repaired very easily (doors etc.)

Does anyone have any photos of these cars... this was my first vehicle and it was burned down together with my house & garage during the war in Bosnia. Since then I drove and owned dozens of all kinds of cars, but never did I feel the same buzz as when as a teenager I used to nick of to town with my polished 105l without my dad knowing! Thanks boys!

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your Skoda (and your house)

I live in Belfast, Northern Ireland and am a proud owner of one of the last Skoda 130LSE left over here. I absolutely love the charm and characters of this car. And yes, it is surprisingly nippy for what it is. It's also been incredibly reliable except for a cracked head - a traditional weak spot, I guess having a cast iron head on an alloy engine block was always courting trouble.

No "bob weight governor failure" this time? I liked your other eastern European car reviews; please write more. I hear Polonez has many parts that regularly fall off, much more than Skoda. Skoda was seriously probably the best Eastern manufacturer, and the only one which is successful today.

Cheap czechoslovakian charmer!


Absoloutly nothing as yet.

General Comments:

I love this car. What it lacks in performance it makes up for with personality.

I am 2 metres tall and have plenty of headroom, the car is very spacious and has 4 doors.

The lack of luggage space is a pain at times, but I keep finding new places to stash stuff inside.

The car runs on leaded petrol, which is expensive. However, it is not very thirsty and can deliver around 16 km/l.

Insurance is as cheap as it gets. You might need more than 43bhp to cause a big accident.

Due to the lack of these cars on the road, spare parts aren't always easy to find. The positive side of this is that the Skoda is almost a cult car.

It squeaks and rattles a bit, but it starts everytime. There was a recent period where I didn't drive it for 3 weeks, during which temperatures were below -10. The first time I tried it, it roared to a start. Excellent.

All in all, it's a cool car, for people who like a bit of minimalistic style, and don't care what everyone else thinks.

I agree! I have second old Skoda already and I think it's the best cheap car I could get.
