2018 Subaru Outback 2.5 from North America

Summary:

Great car, terrible electronics in the touchscreen

Faults:

The touch screen quit within a month of purchase. I replaced it with aftermarket. Nothing else has given me any problems.

I changed the transmission fluid when I bought the car. I also do my own oil changes which is super easy on this car. Last week I replaced the spark plugs.

General Comments:

We use this car for road trips. We take it into the mountains to camp. I try to avoid real extreme off road situations, but some of those roads get bad in a hurry. We were up in Kentucky last August and were driving up a gravel road to a waterfall. The road got worse and worse, and I started getting worried because we were way back in the hills with zero cell service. Then we came to a spot where the road opened up, but it was a silty slime. I thought for sure we were screwed. But, the Outback just charged through barely even slipping. Very impressed with the Symetrical AWD. When I'm way out in the boonies I need reliable.

The touchscreen on 2018 models is terrible and I got screwed on that one. Wish I had known before I bought the car. So, after much research I ordered an aftermarket double din stereo and installed it. I'd much rather have the factory stereo, but such is life. No extra energy to get mad about it. There was a recall, but I was just a hair outside of that window.

I would totally buy another Subaru. This car is very peppy for a 2.5 powerplant. I'm not super crazy about the CV transmission. But I'll live with it. I wish Subaru would be willing to make the touchscreen situation right at this juncture, but it would cost me over a grand to have them fix it. I haven't been impressed with the attitude of the local Subaru dealership, but that's the modern world I guess. I'll keep looking for a touchscreen out of a wreck, like a 2019 model and try to fix it myself. But, I'm not holding my breath.
