2001 Subaru Outback Legacy from North America - Comments

My check engine light went on at 15,000 miles. I have taken my car in for service 8 times during the last six months to fix the same "error" code causing the light to come on. The Subaru dealer has replaced many parts, but the check engine light keeps coming on again. Thank goodness the car is still under the three year warranty. The Subaru dealership is responsive. However, their headquarters doesn't seem to have a clue as to the real cause of the problem nor how to fix it.

I love the Subaru Outback, except for the check engine light problem that I am still working on. I have a bike rack on top that holds two bicycles. It drives and handles well. I'm putting my Subaru warranty to the test with this check engine light problem. I've had it in 8 times now. How will they stick to their warranty?

I had this problem with my Legacy. Have you tried replacing the solenoid or sensors? If not, try that.

Our Engine Check light comes on, occasionally. One or two Chevron Pro-Gard Fuel Injector Cleaner always put the light out for months at a time. (Chevron? That is what Costco Sells; 4/box.) Eventually, if this doesn't work, some Auto Parts stores like Schuck's in the State of Washington are now loaning code analyzers (deposit required) and will print the readings for you. (Also they're to help sell the parts.) (Discretion: I noticed the owner's manual in all our late vehicles do not recommend using fuel system cleaners. I've fewer problems when I use an occasional cleaner.)

It's a solenoid. What else would it be?

Check the gas cap. If you gas up and forget to twist the cap on the Subaru it will enter a check light code that can only be cleared by disconnecting the battery and then reconnecting the battery.

Sometimes my Subaru won't start. I mean it cranks, but doesn't roll over and start. Then check engine light comes on. After a few tries, it will start and check engine light goes off after a while. It keeps on happening every few days. I changed the batteries and the starter. Someone suggested fuel injector cleaner, but I think that won't resolve the problem with starting the engine. The same person also recommended that I change the spark plugs. Any sgguestion is welcome.

I had this problem once and discovered that refilling my brake fluid made the light go off. Go figure.

Subaru's check engine lights will always come on. Good luck fixing one at this age/mileage. I have never been able to figure out how to fix this. It's a Subaru quirk. Most Subaru's don't like high octane fuel either. Keep this in mind. They may run better, but for some reason this seems to turn on the lights sooner. The gas cap thing is true, but is a minor issue. Usually the computer will tell you that it's emision related; which is not true! You can replace your Cat's and sensors and the light will come back on!
