1990 Subaru XT Coupe 1.8 turbo from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Odd

Faults:

Warped brake discs.

General Comments:

OK, this is a really odd car. An ebay special, it is extremely rare on UK roads. Mine is mechanically sound, but the brakes are shot and I'm not convinced I can get the spares.

Air suspension still works, engine is punchy and handling is good - but oh boy, what a weird vehicle!

1986 Subaru XT GL 1.8 from North America

Summary:

The car, I think, is a fun, project car, if you are one who wants to spend a lot of money with upkee

Faults:

The clutch went out, both front CV axles went out, power steering pump leaks, overheats even with the A/C on, rear trailer bar rusted through which rubbed my tires against the springs, fuel door would not open, fuel gauge did not work, and the whole exhaust was falling off.

General Comments:

Once repaired, I found the car very fuel efficient, minoeuverable, and fun to speed around. Although, the car could use some more horsepower.

They are very unique when it comes to there fighter jet instrument cluster set-up, and the one windshield wiper that does back and forth.

1990 Subaru XT Turbo 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Ed Straker eat your heart out!

Faults:

A few oil leaks.

Warped front disc's.

Air suspension started failing (not fixed)

CV gaiters split, then joints failed.

Exhaust manifold started blowing.

Several other minor niggles.

General Comments:

I've owned this car a few years and frankly its been a pain, I've now p/x'd it hence the review.

Its quirky!

Looks great from the front and bloody awful from every other angle.

It has a very good turning circle hence the way it chews CV joints. The air suspension started failing and that means BIG cost to replace. It can be set to firm or sloppy from inside the cabin, and is really just a silly gimmick.

The car is very fragile both mechanically and bodily, it likes exhausts and has a huge appetite for cam belts, I also found the engine very lumpy and hesitant, apparently this is normal because it was made for the N. American market and has dozens of emission control devices stuck to the engine which sap power and pump the inlet manifold full of recycled gases.

The engine has reasonable power, but quickly runs out of steam and the turbo whistles and whines, but you go nowhere from around 90mph, at which point the steering goes vague and the car starts to wander and drift as you prepare to meet your maker.. not confidence inspiring at all.

The interior is based on a fighter cockpit, with a strange steering wheel and pistol grip manual gearstick.

These cars are very rare in the UK and I can see why, they don't last, they rust, they are annoying, and the 4WD system is next to useless.

My advice... steer clear and buy a normal Japanese saloon and save money.

I cannot disagree more. In general the Subaru is a unique marque. I find them extremely reliable having had an XT and a Legacy 2.2. Millions of drivers in the US love them even with all the pollution stuff attached. The XT is easier than most of the new ones to work on.

I agree that the 4wd is superfluous, but only because the front wheel drive is good enough by itself. I think you lose something by engaging the back wheels except if you need to get out of somewhere you shouldn't be in the first place.

Show me another vehicle that will scoot along with over 200,000 miles on it.

1987 Subaru XT GL 1.8L MPFI from North America

Summary:

An excellent subaru, wow

Faults:

The clutch had to be changed.

Needed new CV boots on both front axles

(Still using original CV axles).

Exhaust system was rusted out.

Minor surface rust.

Both camshaft seals were leaking oil.

Oil pump.

New struts.

Transmission main bearings worn.

General Comments:

Excellent reliable car.

Lots of room for driver and passenger.

Backseat area is small, not good for tall people.

The whole inside of this car is cool, it looks like you are sitting in the cockpit of a jet.

This car takes off fast and can lay a 45 foot patch of rubber with both front tires.

Passing cars on the highway is no problem, but acceleration slows down after 160KPH.

I've had this car up to 220 KPH with the engine at redline.

I wonder if the new subaru WRX is as reliable as this car is.

Well.. I haven't found any reviews on a Subaru XT.. but maybe you can help..

Comparison.. how is it to this car? (if you know..)

And all I know about this XT is it's 5spd... and it's 4cyl.

1987 Subaru XT 1.8 turbo from Czech Republic

Summary:

Unusually cheap, unusually good

Faults:

My alternator has broken at 229.000km.

All the air shocks had to be changed.

General Comments:

A very reliable car, which is fun to drive. Also very fast with good brakes.

Completely powered is a very comfortable car either.

But what is most important are its reliability and superiority when driving in winter.
