2001 Suzuki Jimny JLX Hardtop 1.3 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Cheap reliable fun!

Faults:

Solenoid for front hubs has been replaced twice.

All wheel bearings were replaced at around 50,000km's.

Original suspension too low - have lifted this.

Original tyres too narrow - larger tyres fitted - all good now!

General Comments:

This is the first 4WD I have owned & I've had an absolute blast in it.

This vehicle can go places you wouldn't think possible - pretty much point it in the right direction & hit the accelerator & hold on! Climbs like a goat!

The ride gets a bit bumpy at times & you need to be careful on wet bitumen roads & when its windy, but take it off-road in the gravel & mud & it loves it!

2001 Suzuki Jimny 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nippy, small, no easy access to storage space, dangerous on road and soft top not worth the trouble

Faults:

Clips that hold the soft top down.

Lack of grip on road.

General Comments:

Car is unsteady on the road and the grip is terrible in rain or snow.

A nightmare to get at the boot and time consuming to take off the soft top.

Soft top never clips in and stays in, continuously coming unclipped.

As a Suzuki owner and 4x4 enthusiast (and Carsurvey Member), was very interested to hear your comments on roadholding in the wet and snow. Noticed you owned an SJ which of course was one of the finest offroaders ever made, but of course these had stability problems being a small leaf sprung car. Thought the Jimny might have been sorted out better being on coils. Was seriously thinking about getting rid of the 5 door LWB Vitara for a Jimny. Will think again now thanks. Our other 4x4 a Frontera which is as stable as any large luxury saloon at high speeds - but not Suzuki reliability!
