1994 Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good for a 1.4

Faults:

Alternator on the way out and it's starting to show signs of rust on the rear arches.

General Comments:

For a small 1.4 this car's performance is not that bad, and it does have a slightly sporty feel to it while it's being driven. Handling is moderate.

With a few small extras it can look very sporty, especially the 3 door, and it has one of the best looking insides I've have seen on a car. Loads of space front and back.

If you are going to buy one I would strongly recommend a 1.4 multipoint injection one or a 1.4 16v or above.

1994 Vauxhall Astra LS 1.7 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Economical, reliable, decent car

Faults:

Nothing at all.

General Comments:

This car is very reliable and if it were not for the higher than average insurance grouping, it would rate better in the running costs. MPG averages close to 55, but this can be a lot less if the car is due for service.

It is a comfortable relaxed car, good at motorway speeds. My biggest criticism of this car however, is its awful handling, and poor stability when being driven briskly on typical A/B roads. The steering is also heavy at low speeds and very sloppy at high speeds.

Overall though I am pleased with this choice of car and would consider another as a replacement.

1994 Vauxhall Astra Cesaro 1.6i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Bargain performance and reliability

Faults:

I've had a new water pump at 110,000 miles and that's it!

General Comments:

It's been a great car. I had it serviced every 6,000 miles since I've had it so I've got a full service history with it and I do a lot of miles for my job.

Cannot fault the car, goes great, drives nice, damn good on fuel (around 360 miles to a full tank) and like I said apart from tyres and a new back box on the exhaust, everything is still from new at 115,500 miles!!!

And I'm still bombing all around the country in it now...

I have a 1994 Cesaro and I love it!! its an absolute dream to drive. Aquaplanes a little bit, but just because of the tyres I guess. Had a bit of a disaster with the back box and had to get that replaced, but that's it. its running on about 89 thousand miles and its still going. These cars are amazing!

1994 Vauxhall Astra LS 1.4i 8v (60bhp) from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Reliable but not quick enough

Faults:

Exhaust back box cracked, replacement cost £25 fitted.

Brake pads wore out, £18 replacements fitted myself.

General Comments:

Nice looking reliable car. Not really fast enough for my style of driving (Motorway).

Front tyres wore quickly, possibly due to cornering too fast.

Seems to drink petrol, only about 300-350 miles to a tank, but again probably due to my driving style rather than the car.

I'm sure it's 75bhp. And mine is a great motorway car. Nice, quiet, relaxing and plenty of parp when you need it.

1994 Vauxhall Astra LSi 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great runner - v. economical... bring on my new Vectra though...

Faults:

Water pump failure, all disc sets on 4 wheels, back wiper failure, central locking failure, boot lock failure.

Much of this due to high miles (apparently!)

General Comments:

Runs extremely well - very economical.

Due to purchase new Vauxhall shortly - Vectra - not overly sure of best year and model now after reading the reviews !!

1994 Vauxhall Astra Cesaro 1.8i 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Sunroof chassis wasn't fixed to the car properly, dealer sorted that out straight away..

Exhaust emissions were a little too high, again dealer sorted it out..

General Comments:

A very capable car that's at home in the town or on the motorway.

Fairly cheap to buy but a little high (compared to the Astra Sport) on insurance.

Fuel econmomy is better than the old 1.8 Golf I had (250 to the tank from the Cesaro as to 185 from the Golf) so I am very pleased with my purchase.
