I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me, what insurance group does the Vauxhall Astra GTE MK2 fall under? And roughly how much it would be.. for a 18year old to insure.

I'm 17 now, and thinking of buying one after my 18th birthday..

*shock horror* 2.0ltr GTE for my first car :O :P.

I've loved these cars since I was about 6 and my neighbor took me out in his 16v 2.0ltr :)

My son who is also 18 recently bought an astra mk2 1.8 cdi to restore. The engine is the same as early 8v gte's pushing out 112bhp so decided to give it the full gte "look". (abeit 5 doors)

his biggest problem was the insurance a lot of companies wouldn't touch him.

Ended up costing him £181 per month.

His reasoning was why waste six grand on a 1000cc lawnmower when you can be different and have a cool retro fun car for next to nothing.

I recently had an astra gte 16v for about 3 months and truely regret selling it, they are getting very rare now and are soon to be sought after classics, you hardly see them on the road anymore, mine was white, had 165000 miles on the clock and was fairly reliable, although it did need a lot of tlc and as I had to use it everyday as my daily drive I didint have the time to spent on it to keep it in everyday useability and struggling to find parts for it, saying that with a pinking shuddery engine and a gearbox that crunched, i kept up with a subaru impreza uk turbo model no bother, for about quarter of a mile until I turned off to go home, these cars really are bullets, and I've never drivin a car that bounces of the limiter so quickly it accelerates so fast as standard, it easily keeps up with todays hothatches and amazinly these are now knocking on 20 yrs old, i recently purchased an impreza and as standard the astra would have gave it a good go for its money, I'm already saving for my next gte 16v that I can keep stored and appreciate it more truelly great cars overall.

I own a 1989 red top Astra GTE, which has done only 84000 miles and was made in West Germany. I've had it locked away for ten years now, and I'm just about to bring it back out and see what looks it gets.

You lucky so-and-so. Just don't leave it anywhere. I don't know anyone who's had one of these who didn't have it nicked at least once.
