1990 Vauxhall Belmont SRi from UK and Ireland - Comments

"An attractive reliable car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Fuel pump relay.

Passenger electric window failure.

Blocked fuel injectors.

General comments?

I bought my Belmont in 1998 from a garage. It was previously been owned by a middle aged couple, so it was completely standard with a full service history.

The SRi model was a fine looking and running car. It was well geared with a very gusty engine, which meant driving on the motorways was a pleasure. It was in A1 condition when I bought it, with low miles on it, it had no rust whatsoever and I always kept it in the garage.

The car was the best condition Belmont that I've ever seen. I was lucky to get it at what I thought was a bargain price for an H reg car in this condition, with this level of spec, which included power steering, electric windows, E/M, FFSR and C/L.

I spent very little money on it. The biggest expense was a brand new set of Goodyear eagle tyres. The items that went wrong with it, were due to lack of use. The car had been sitting previously for long periods, so a sticky window motor and fuel pump relay were replaced. The fuel injectors had to be cleaned due to tar build up from the engine doing little work!

Interesting review. I was thinking of buying one (there is an SRi going cheap in the paper) but now you made my mind up. I used to have a 1.2 Astra Merit and I used to love it. Now we have an L reg Peugeot 405 1.8i which, although a nice car, doesn't like the ammount of miles I'm putting on it, so I'm getting the Belmont so 'compliment' it.

I thoroughly agree with your comments about the engine - my version was the 1.8 SXi, and it really was a pleasure to drive. It was amazing what a difference the few extras made to the appearance as well. A rather bland car was turned into something that really looked good. I now drive a Honda Accord 2.0i auto, which is lovely, smooth and silky, but I still do sometimes miss that nice Vauxhall grunt and surge that used to come up from the Belmont's engine when I came out of a bend!

I have got a old astra (1990) g-reg I had it for about 7 years now its just the 1.4 5DR hatch version I can tell you that it nevers goes wrong I've been mostly all around the UK in it (BLACKPOOL, BOURNEMOUTH, TORQUAY, LUTON, EASTBOURNE, NEWQUAY, LANDS END, MANCHESTER, ALL AROUND WALES, TELFORD, DERBY, AND MANY MORE PLACES TO NAME)

its never let me down yet all its had is serving tyres brakes exhaust that kind of stuff and a clutch

the car has now done over 151 thousand miles and the engine is a sweet as a nut,if you don't believe it come and listen for yourself, see the key is to a good engine is oil changes about every 3-6 months depending on how many miles you do always use a good quality of oil semi oil 10/40 grade never thrash the engine especialy from cold that's the worst thing you can do, and to be honest the vauxhall 8v engine will run forever as long you look after the engine.
