1998 Vauxhall Calibra SE8 2L 16V Eco Tec 2L 16v Eco Tec from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fast, good looking and not too expensive

Faults:

Exhaust has suffered two blows in 6 months.

Oxygen sensor playing up, stalling the car out randomly (happened from 86,000 onwards).

Engine revs by itself sometimes when stationary. It goes from 1000 to 2000 rpm by itself. Anyone know why? If you've had it happen please tell me why! keirbrook@msn.com

A £1500 insurance premium, but you pay a price for a quality car!

That ain't much for a year, so I'm pretty happy.

General Comments:

A brilliant car to drive. Fast and largely reliable.

I think it may have been a bit ahead of its time, so sensors are often a problem.

Luxurious inside, leather seats, air con, heated seats. Like a jag!!!

Unless you have big money to part with, a Calibra is the best looking and performing car you can buy.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Your mate must have been ripped off spending 2900 to get it running right. The erratic idle is caused by the idle control valve. This needs to be removed and cleaned with carb cleaner and oiled after so the bearing in it moves freely and doesn't stick. All the breather pipes need to be cleaned out too. It's a hours job and will last a good 4 years after this.

Very common problems!
