2017 Vauxhall Insignia GS Sports Tourer SRi Nav 1.6 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Spacious, economical

Faults:

Previous owner replaced the clutch.

Sometimes the start/stop does not work.

Minor oil leak from somewhere.

Tyre pressure monitor system is inaccurate.

General Comments:

New shape Grand Sport Insignia and the "Sports Tourer" is basically just the estate version, something of a rarity as most Insignia's you see are the hatchback.

It's still a fine looking car, and just has even more space. Mine is bright silver. Rear window tints. SRi Nav trim is a nice one with all the mod cons you could ever need. Seats are super comfortable. Ride is smooth.

1.6 diesel is probably one of the best engines to go for, more reliable than the bigger 2.0 diesel. The smaller petrol's units are apparently pretty good as well.

The car is fantastic to drive, very nice handling and punchy performance while always doing more than 50 mpg.

You can get them for a nice price used, but as always, only buy a looked after car, walk away from rough examples, which unfortunately there are plenty of them out there. Lots were used as taxis and taxi drivers get rid of them when they start giving problems at higher mileage. But have patience and seek out a nice one and you have a brilliant all round car.

My thoughts exactly. They really are the best for the money in a used market overcrowded with overpriced cars.

2017 Vauxhall Insignia Design Grand Sport 1.5T petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Vauxhall's best!

Faults:

Nothing. The car needed new brake pads at its last service, that is all.

Minor interior trim rattle. Acceptable at seven years old and nearly 80K mileage.

The car's exterior is unmarked.

General Comments:

The Insignia is a great looking car. This is the first of the new Grand Sport cars for 2017, I got a great deal on this car last year and it has been nothing but enjoyable and easy to run and live with.

Dark grey metallic, common color but suits it fine. Design model is a fairly average specification, but the car still has nice alloy wheels, a lovely interior with all the electronics you could need.

Seats are very comfortable. The car handles and rides smoothly. Dash is dark grey/black and stylish. Cubby holes and areas for storage are well thought out. The car cruises on the motorway nicely.

1.5 turbo petrol engine is a nice one. Quiet and has enough power, while 35 - 40 mpg is still possible. I know the diesels offer more performance and economy, but the thing is, my last Insignia was diesel, and I got fed up with all the troubles they come with (DPF, glow plugs, turbo, and so on) so it's nice to have a simple petrol engine again. I know this engine also has a turbo and a "GPF" (gas particulate filter) but experience has shown these engines still give less trouble than diesels long term.

Overall this has been a fantastic car and so long as it continues to be reliable, I'll keep it for many years yet!

You might not have that "GPF", I'm pretty sure they only were on the 1.5T petrol engine from 2019.

No big deal either way, as mentioned they are less problematic than diesels "DPF".

2017 Vauxhall Insignia SRi Vx Line Grand Sport 2.0 D Blue Injection from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good

Faults:

Clutch.

Timing chain rattle - replaced as a precaution. Expensive.

General Comments:

This Grand Sport Insignia is punchy and nice to look at in Vx Line trim. Builds on the already sporty SRi trim. My car is bright red.

2.0 diesel "Blue Injection" is fast and economical, though watch out for that timing chain as mentioned above.

It's a very nice car to drive. Interior fit and finish is excellent for Vauxhall, and long journeys are a pleasure. Easily better than the older generation Insignia.

Been a bit expensive to repair but it is a fantastic car, but just be aware a lot of higher mileage newer shape Insignias were (like mine!) initially used as taxis and will have led a hard life. If buying again I'd honestly go for a low mileage petrol engine version.

Still the best value for money large family / executive cars on the market.

The newer 2017 on-wards Insignia is a fine car, and has less problems than the older model overall. Watch out for the usual diesel high mileage issues. A lot are appearing on the used market now at less than six grand. Only a good deal if you get a looked after car.

They are good cars, but the range of engines is confusing and overwhelming. I find it interesting the reviewed car had the timing "chain" renewed. I believe (but could be wrong) the 2.0 diesel in these cars uses a belt AND a small chain to drive the cams, so both need checked at six years / 100K mile intervals. In all honesty I'd go for the smaller 1.6 diesel engine, it seems a simpler unit, but again unsure if it uses a belt or chain (or both!?). Unfortunately also both use adblu, another pain if you get problems with them.

Newer 1.5 diesels I'm not so sure about; introduced in later cars around 2021 and are still too new to comment on any long term reliability.

Fairly certain the 1.5T petrol units have chains only and seem reliable so far with no specified interval for change, so are also a good choice. Much simpler. They have been about since the beginning (2017) now I think.
