1979 Volkswagen Golf GLD 1.5 IDI diesel from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A cheap reliable safe and fun piece of engineering brilliance

Faults:

Electrical system has had a few problems due to previous owners dodgy wiring.

Interior was in poor condition when I got the car, but with looking after it keeps well.

General Comments:

Car was still running original shock absorbers at 250000km.

Gets the best economy of any small car I know apart from newer diesel Golfs.

This car is underpowered, though a 2" exhaust helped things a little.

The car is still a joy to drive, is extremely stable and has light steering.

Tire wear and handling improved markedly when I put some alloy wheels on the car.

1979 Volkswagen Golf 1.4 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A cheap and cheerful Jack the lad with a nice personality

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Brilliant fuel compsumption - 400 miles on £20.00 diesel @ 82p litre. This is a car with personality. Bodywork has only a little rust. I've never had a car that is so economical.
