1980 Volkswagen Golf GTi 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The original hot hatchback

Faults:

Upholstery decayed at an alarming rate.

Brake pads had to be replaced at 57,000 miles and again at 72,000 miles.

Clutch was excessively worn and had to be replaced at 64,000 miles.

General Comments:

A very reliable small family hatchback.

Also great fun to drive.

Good value for money at £1,900 for a sporty six year old hatchback.

Held its value and was worth £850 by the time it was a decade old.

Comfort and interior space were also good.

1980 Volkswagen Golf GL Diesel 1.6 litre diesel (non turbo) from South Africa

Summary:

A reliable workhorse!

Faults:

The clutch was replaced under warranty at 40000 km. At 210 000 km the clutch was replaced again and I also fitted a rebuilt gearbox at that stage.

General Comments:

One of the best cars I've ever owned. Reliable, extremely economical, and it was always a pleasure to drive. Dealer service was used throughout the life of the car and it was a pleasure dealing with the VW dealers.
