1993 Volkswagen Golf VR6 2.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The best hatchback in the world

Faults:

Passenger's side window motor failed at 77,000 miles.

Stereo developed faults at around 80,000 miles before finally packing up at 86,000 miles.

Tyres wore very quickly.

Interior trim started to crumble during my final year of ownership.

General Comments:

The Golf was a very reliable car except for one or two electrical problems.

Build quality was initially very good, but the car's interior eventually started to show its age.

The best thing about the Golf was its swift performance and dynamic handling.

It was also very comfortable and practical.

1993 Volkswagen Golf VR6 2.8 from Japan

Fast, but could have been made faster

Faults:

My Gearbox has gone twice. one in only 12 days. though there was warranty so I got it changed for free.

I am confused on how the automatic transmission changes it's gear. my Vr6 changes the gear at least when the revs is at 4000. Any comments?

There seems to be heating problem.

Rear door dosen't open from inside.

General Comments:

The driving seat is very uncomfortable. Gave me a serious leg pain.

1993 Volkswagen Golf VR6 2.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Airbag failed to work in a head-on crash after 76,000 miles.

Power steering started to fail soon after the car's crash damage was repaired.

Stereo stopped working after 90,000 miles.

Window motors failed after 106,000 miles.

General Comments:

The Golf VR6 was a dream to drive and generally reliable, apart from a few electrical faults. It was worth every penny of the £6,000 that I paid for it.

I liked the VR6 because it was great to drive, good value for money, comfortable and well equipped.

After three years of excellent motoring I sold it to a neighbour for £2,500 and it's still going strong now after 12 years on the road.

1993 Volkswagen Golf Diesel 1.6 diesel from North America

Terrible

Faults:

2 alternators.

2 door locks passenger side.

3 door locks driver side.

Rear view mirror.

2 fuel filters in a month.

Trunk lock cylinder.

Cheaply constructed dash.

General Comments:

Parts for this vehicle were astronomical.

Service costs were equal to the parts.

All the instruments on the dash came apart because it was cheap plastic.

The area around the trunk lock cylinder was so rusted the cylinder fell out.

Great fuel economy.

0 to 60 in 10 minutes.

Sad to hear you had so many problems with this diesel Golf. I owned one for five years. I bought it used with 150,000 miles (246,000 kilometers). When I gave it to my son, it had over 350,000 miles. During all these years and miles: no engine rebuiding or repairs, no transmission or clutch repairs, no radiator problems, no fuel pump repairs, nor repairs that cost me more than $500 each. This car was a model assembled in Mexico. Of course, I had minor repairs, but I must admit it was the best car I ever owned. Maybe not the most comfortable and quiet car, but very efficient. I got a steady 40 miles per US gallon (I do mostly highway driving). Before this car I had a 1993 Ford Escort, and I had to sell it because it was falling apart with only 110,000 miles.

1993 Volkswagen Golf CL 1.8 Gas from North America

Summary:

A sporty and rugged small car

Faults:

Ignition wires failed within the first six months.

Exhaust system replaced while still under warranty, car was two years old.

The dash lights were replaced under warranty, but the dealer cracked the sockets so the lights constantly went on and off.

Clutch link snapped at 120 000 km.

Battery replaced at 160 000 km.

General Comments:

This car is seriously quick and handles like it's on rails.

Dealer service was normally excellent.

Received great value on trade-in for purchase of new car. I received almost half of what I paid for it 9.5 years before.

1993 Volkswagen Golf Ryder 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Really looks the part and you know in the morning it will start

Faults:

The only fault is being a two door version, the drivers door is dropping a little.

General Comments:

Stands up to all the kids can throw at it.

Its met blue with alloys, even though it's only a 1.4 it looks the biz.

The only let down is it's a 4 speed.

Utterly reliable, needed new brake discs in the summer as the old ones were warped, the pair cost £8.00, things like that you don't forget in a hurry.

Go and look at a similar age fiesta or escort, call and get some rust treatment on the way.
