1990 Volkswagen Jetta GL 1.6L from North America

Summary:

It's good for getting somewhere, but not in style.

Faults:

The interior upholstery has started to fall down.

The exhaust system has fallen to pieces.

A fuse blows just about every week.

The glove compartment has fallen apart.

The drivers side window has quit working.

The crank on the sunroof has broken off.

General Comments:

I bought it off of my uncle for 300 dollars. I didn't know it was a broken egg on wheels. He bought it off another uncle, who, quite obviously, didn't take care of it.

Picky, picky... beggars can't be choosy. You could have done much worse for $300.

1990 Volkswagen Jetta Carat 1.8 ? from North America

Summary:

Very reliable with an engine built like a tank!

Faults:

Alternator Replaced

Odometer Broke at 100k miles

Radiator.

General Comments:

This is the most reliable car I have ever owned (had it for 11 years) to date. I bought it used and once I fixed the few problems it had, (alternator) it was great! It had some weird electrical problems, but it was so dependable I didn't mind. I sold the car last year to get something bigger (this was my college car!) and it was still running strong.

With a set of studded tires it was amazing on snow packed roads.

I would not hesitate to buy another Jetta like this, but I haven't read great reviews on the Jetta's built today.

1990 Volkswagen Jetta GL 1.8L from North America

Summary:

It is very reliable and is an awsome car to drive

Faults:

Three door handles do not work, forth broke off, but at least it is fixable

New clutch

A couple minor muffler problems

New spark plugs, and spark plug wires.

General Comments:

I love my car, it is so small and fun to drive around because I can dart in and out of vehicles

It has been very reliable for me, and is always running great, it is also very cheap on gas, and usually very cheap to run.

1990 Volkswagen Jetta 3 speed from North America

Summary:

Goes forever and if kept up, will never strand you

Faults:

I had to get it safetied for insurance, and all I had to do was replace one of the back shocks because it was leaking. I replaced both because they come in pairs.

If anything sounds funny or acts funny, I use my common sense and take it into the shop. I take it so a Volkswagen dealership just because I think these cars are quite a bit different than domestics, so I take it to the people who know them best.

General Comments:

This car is hilarious! Sometimes when I start it, the horn honks, sometimes just a quick barely audible honk, and sometimes a long long honk. Most of the time there is no honk.

Sometimes I have trouble getting into the trunk.

Mostly I just LOVE this car. I have driven it a lot since I have had it and sometimes it does funny things, but it has never stranded me and I would not even think twice about taking it on a huge road trip. If you can keep up the little things on this car, I would definitely recommend buying it.

Oh, this was funny to me at first, but now I am used to it. Mine is a 3 speed automatic transmission. I had never even heard of that, but once I got used to it revving at 3000 rpm at 100 km/h, it was fine.

The gas mileage is really good in the city and good on the highway. Staying close to the speed limit on the highway helps a lot because of the small motor in this car.

I started putting premium gas in it this winter, and the car seems to LOVE it, so I think I will continue to do that. I get better mileage, so I think its worth it.

Lots of cabin space.

Lots of trunk space.

A+

I will have to agree with you. I have a 1990 2 door automatic, my horn honks sometimes when starting, I have had all the little things happen, but all in all, it still scoots along the road as if it owns it. I just loves the highway and all with 360,000 km on it. Pretty respectable for a gas engine.
