1981 Volkswagen Polo Formel E 1.1 petrol from Norway

Summary:

Ultimate economy box

Faults:

Rear muffler rusted out and replaced.

Lower part of car had a lot of stone chips and was resprayed, no serious rust however.

Front headlight replaced due to condensation.

General Comments:

My mother's commuter car. Was the Formel E fuel saver edition. Had an econometer and a overdrive as fourth gear. Barebone version, not even a radio. Very reliable and ultra frugal, about 0.45 L/10km in average commuter consumption. Very cramped inside, but not used for any longer trips so not a big problem.

1981 Volkswagen Polo Saloon 1.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Failure to start reliably.

Blown engine at 65,000 miles.

Gear box linkage problems.

Stater motor at 70,000.

General Comments:

The resistance to rust shown by the body was superb, other than that it was slow, thirsty, a bad starter, uncomfortable, bad handling, the WORST brakes I've ever used and poor lights.

Couldn't get rid of it quick enough.
