Cylinder head gasket.
Petrol tank leaked when purchased.
A fine first car!!! I've thrashed the living daylights out of it since I passed my test, and it hasn't once broken down on me. 20,000 miles in 14 months and the little bugger still keeps going.
Only problem is that it's a bit on the slow side and could do with a fifth gear. Flies for a car of its age. I got 96 mph out of the old thing once, and it got me to Manchester and back from Newcastle no problem whatsoever.
Hardly any rust, no major mechanical faults, easy to maintain, cheap and chearful.
I couldn't agree more mate, this little car runs forever, thrash it everywhere and it comes back for more! got to sell it soon though to slow for my liking. for anyone thinking of getting one for their first car you couldn't get a more cheap and reliable car than this. Look how many there still are out their, probably get a 1.7td MK3 Astra next.
Mine was expensive due to the things wrong with it. I agree with the thrashing around - it comes back for more.
The speed issue though is my concern also - its too slow and not good on long runs. A well looked after Polo makes a good first car though in my opinion.
Selling mine at the moment as I'm getting an Audi 90 E 2.3.
A brilliant car. I got one when I passed my test two years ago and it's still going strong.
No major problems with it, just the odd dent due to my bad driving, but hail, rain, sleet or snow it starts first time.
I agree with it being slow, however, I can still pass many other bigger engined cars from a static start.
An excellent spend of my student loan!
