1980 Volkswagen Rabbit LX review from North America

- did not meet local 'Air-care' requirements when purchased. Replacing the points and condenser helped it to pass

- alternator replaced at 255,000kms

-front driver side balljoint grinds when car rolls in reverse

- Passenger side vent widow latch is broken, tape makes a good temporary fix

- replaced muffler when purchased

- fuel mileage was poor due to rich fuel/air idle setting and ignition timing

- suspension is quite loose

- E-brake assembly has come apart numerous times.

I bought this car for $400 dollars during the past summer and must say that for a 24 year old piece of machinery, it works remarkably.

It gets driven daily over 60kms and has been for the most part very reliable, getting between 30 and 35 mpg depending on how hard you feel like pushing her. Insurance is very cheap (approx. $120/month)

Like the name implies, this Rabbit is very quick considering its small 70hp engine. Its lightness and well-geared 4 speed are of definite benefit. Capable of out-sprinting the average car to pull up aside you. Puts most Japanese cars to shame.

The body is in rough shape, but I am proud to drive a car that I am not afraid of using. This car takes a beating at times (snow and off-road), and has held up fine.

Interior amenities are practically non-existent. Has a speedometer, odometer and various idiot lights. Heater and rear defrost work well. High interior noise.

This Bavarian machine is a blast to drive, cheap and simply designed. HIGHLY recommended for those with a good mechanical aptitude seeking low-cost transportation.
