1969 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia from North America - Comments

"Surely the finest example of automotive engineering"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Engine gave out at 230,000. It was the second engine. I installed the third one, it has given excellent service.

I replaced the transmission upon buying the van. Second gear had quit working.

There is rust in some places along the bottom of the van. The doors leak in heavy rain. The seats are not very comfortable, even with new upholstery.

The muffler has a persistent leak.

The pop-top will not stay down.

Carburettor was replaced this year.

General comments?

I love this car! Despite its many faults and idiosyncracies, it is the finest piece of automotive machinery ever put on the road. I hope that there never comes a day that I will be without my beloved bus.

I highly recommend this car to anyone willing to get their hands dirty and enjoy it! Truly the most unique and useful car on the road.

I really enjoyed your truthful and heart felt comments. I also am addicted to Volkswagen busses. I am buying my fifth.

I wish I could find a vanagon from 1969... That could go for a lot of money.

All these VW Bus reviewers are entering "Vanagon" as their model designation (even though the Vanagon was not introduced until 1980) cause they don't see "Bus" or "Van" on the model list for this site. "Type II" IS on the list, but they don't know enough to pick that one, which would be correct. HO.
