1996 Volvo 460 2.0i from Norway

Summary:

Reliable Swedish quality

Faults:

Starter changed at 135 000.

Transmission blew at 150 000.

General Comments:

This is one of the most reliable cars I have ever had. The car was whipped every day since I bought it, and nothing ever broke. I drove this car with my caravan across southern Norway, with the pedal to the metal ALL the time. It didn't even overheat. The 2 litre engine is powerful, considering it's a car from 1996.

Maybe a bit soft on the suspension, like all Volvos from the 90s.

The original stereo is rubbish, and needs to be changed.

The transmission literally blew at 150 000, with sprockets and oil flying everywhere. I don't blame the car, since I used 4 sets of tyres the 11 months I had the car. But still worth every penny.

This car has nothing to do with Swedish quality and the Volvo brand. These cars are of inferior quality; everyone who has owned a proper Volvo knows this.

1996 Volvo 460 Li 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A quick comfy tank

Faults:

The only thing I can think that's ever gone wrong with my car is the thermostat got stuck on a few times.

Other than brakes and bulbs, nothing major has gone wrong yet.

General Comments:

I would recommend this car to any driver, young or old.

They're not much of a looker, but a nice set of wheels and lowering it make it look much nicer.

It's fairly fast once it gets out of 1st and 2nd, and handles surprisingly well.

I'm 20, with 2 years no claims and 3 points, and the insurance (fire and theft) is less than £500.

All round it's a good motor.

1996 Volvo 460 sedan 1.8i from Finland

Summary:

Ugly and boring. works OK

Faults:

Rear lamps went broken every half year.

Quite typical, noticed in many examples in traffic.

Bad handling, because of too small tires.

General Comments:

Ugly outlooks, but OK for everyday driving. high fuel consumption compared to car size.

Summary:

Very reliable and good car

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

I like this car a lot. Good drive and the performance is fine for me.

I have put in a "Pipecross" air filter and also new aluminum wheels. Tires: Goodyear Eagle F1 195 55 Z15. The best tires ever.

Nice review. What I would like to know about the Volvo 460, which was not part of the review, include.

1. Is it a back or front-wheel drive?

2. What is the fuel consumption like, in km/liter?

3. Running cost as regards maintenance?

I'm asking all these question because I intend to purchase a used version of this vehicle, or the 480/440 version.

Please could you also let me know through my mail address; ikenwachukwu@dr.com.

Thank you,

Ike.

General Comments:

Lack of power mounted also a JAMEX sports-airfilter. Tyre-size 185/55 15 is too small, a 195/50 15 or a 205/50 15 gives more of a match to driving performance.
