Loose front passenger seat. The dealer is in the process of fixing this.

Stylish solid family car

Faults:

A side trim list was replaced under warranty.

The car has a lot of km. now, but nothing have ever failed.

Solid family car. Safe and strong build. My V40 has had no failures what so ever. Normal service (oil+filter etc.) has been carried out and that is all it has ever cost me.

It is indeed an excellent car. The quality of the materials is very good. The seats are extremely comfortable. It is indeed a car very appropriate for long journeys. With the automatic climate control and the cruise control, on the highway you can go on forever, never feeling tired. Despite it's powerful engine (140 HP) you have the tendency to drive at a slower pace due to the extreme comfort. The fuel consumption is extremely reasonable and the stereo equipment (SC-805) (CD-cassette-radio) is a marvel. I had the chance to drive a brand new V50 and believe me, there's no difference between my car (1998-100.000km) and this new model. This car is really indestructible.

1998 Volvo V40 CD 2.0 Lt from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A safe, reliable, and very comfortable car

Faults:

Paint-work is very thin. It scratches off easily.

Battery needed replacement just after the warranty period.

A few bulbs have had to be replaced.

Apart from that, we have been very lucky.

General Comments:

Very reliable. Has only failed to start once due to the battery going.

Good performance, and good acceleration in sports mode.

Very comfortable on long journeys. Happy to cruise for hours in it. Seats are excellent.

On a full tank of petrol, we struggle to get 250 miles out of it. But that could be down to fast driving style!!!

Forward visibility on right hand bends is restricted due to pillar.

Steering wheel cannot be adjusted for reach.

Can be noisy in the cabin, with roof rack fitted. Also, boot not big enough for an Estate car.

I own a V40 T4 with A/C often on (Increasing fuel consumption). I only do city driving and get 340 Miles out of the 60-Litre tank. You virtually have to have a leak to do 250 Miles only. Get the car checked out.

1998 Volvo V40 T4 CD 1.9 turbo from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Sensible aethsetics - but manic driving

Faults:

Trip computer is faulty - reset button doesn't work so average speed, mpg etc. are inoperable.

Clock cannot be changed.

Ashtray flap fails to open.

General Comments:

Wolf in sheep's clothing - wife thinks I have a smart but sensible family estate!

A little disappointed with the pick-up when one puts a foot down - perhaps the turbo lag is more pronounced on this particular model. Once it does though it is quite quick. Torque steer is noticeable - need to hang on to the wheel. Ride is quite firm - you feel most of the bumps but then it's a sports model.

A practical high class tourer

Great to drive, excellent refined engine and lots of power from the light pressure turbo when required.

Excellent build quality and paintwork.

Classy interior.

Shame about the niggling faults.

Good load carrier without the bulk of the larger Volvo estates.
