1999 Volvo V40 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Quite impressed for an old mans car!!!

Faults:

Inter cooler pipe blown off while speeding along the motorway (severe loss of power!)

Intermittent problem with the accelerator sticking which has gone on for about a year.

Turbo intake pipe split.

Heavy knocking from the front suspension.

Driver's side front window slow in operation.

Two sets of brake pads fitted.

General Comments:

Turbo engine makes for a fun take off, but needs DSA in the wet to stop the wheels from spinning.

As speed increases the handling is a bit scary.

1999 Volvo V40 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good engined family car

Faults:

Needed two new rear windscreens after failure of the heater element. This was covered by the warranty.

Remote central locking has failed on three occasions. This was also covered by the warranty.

General Comments:

The car is extremely poor for all round vision of the road. Large window stanchions make visibility very low.

1999 Volvo V40 XS 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good, reliable transport - but no more

Faults:

N/S rear door seal came loose.

General Comments:

A prime example of a safe, solid, stylish, reliable, but fairly dull car.

1.6 way under powered (2.0T is minimum sensible engine).

More hatchback than estate car.

Well built, well equipped and good value for money especially with recent reductions.

1999 Volvo V40 XS 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Alarm system faulty for 6 months. Two Volvo dealers unable to fix.

Various pieces of trim have fallen off.

Car stalls in 1st and 2nd if you don't rev it quite unlike any other car I have had in the last 9 years (6 new cars).

Gear change is notchy, my dealer says it will have to be replaced soon (22,000 miles).

General Comments:

As a working estate car I would not recommend this V40. It is too small inside and I only get 28 mpg which is poor. The seatbelt warning buzzer is a real pain as are the daytime running lights if you wish to keep a low profile on the motorway. Engine is noisy and unrefined if you push the car on a bit. Handling is safe but uninspiring. In summary a very mediocre car.

1999 Volvo V40 T4 1.9 Turbo from Switzerland

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Fun car to drive. A lot of power...

But the quality and comfort feeling is not as good as in the *70-series of Volvo. And for me the car is a little bit too small. I like the station wagons, when you can throw in your stuff without having to concern whether it fits in or not...

My fifth Volvo so far, but next time I will go for a V70 I think.
