2014 Volvo V40 T5 R-Design Momentum 2.0 from South Africa

Summary:

Great option if you're looking for a small car with premium features

Faults:

To date, the car has only received routine maintenance. It hasn't presented any serious problems.

If I had to mention any issues, I would say:

Rear lights that stop working (software problems).

Starting system failure (broken exhaust valve spring).

Problems with the fuel gauge and on-board computer.

Worn shock absorbers and whining in front brakes.

As you can see, they are only electrical faults. Mechanically, except for the brakes, it has not had any faults to date, neither with the engine, nor the suspension, nor problems with the gearbox.

General Comments:

The car is a small to medium-sized vehicle with a design that I find beautiful. It features elegant yet conservative lines and has changed little compared to previous versions.

The grille has a sharper design, but it still doesn't dare to adopt radical shapes. The headlights, with Volvo's characteristic light signature, are a success, although some might consider them still quite understated (I like them that way).

Compared to previous generations of the V40, the front bumper has been slightly modified and the wheels offer more options, although they don't take many risks in terms of design.

If we compare it to rivals like the Audi A3 (my previous car) or the BMW 1 Series, the V40 isn't the most daring, but it does have a more understated and mature design, especially for those looking for something discreet yet modern.

The V40's interior is focused on functionality, with a simple layout and materials that feel solid but not luxurious. The dashboard is clean, with a 7-inch central screen that does its job. Physical controls are still present, which is a plus for those who prefer the reliability of a button to touch controls.

Interior space is adequate for a car of this size. Rear headroom isn't ideal for tall adults, but it's acceptable for city driving or short trips.

In terms of driving experience, the V40 is a comfortable car, with precise steering and a suspension that handles road imperfections well. Its stability on the road is remarkable.

Overall comfort is quite good, especially for the driver, but the rear seats aren't as spacious as in other models in this segment. As for passengers, it's an ideal car for short urban trips, but not for long journeys with four people.

Comparing it to my previous Audi A3, the V40 doesn't offer the same feeling of agility, but it compensates with a higher level of comfort.

It is an ideal car for those looking for a comfortable, safe car with good fuel efficiency.

2014 Volvo V40 T4 Polestar 1.6 turbo petrol from Brunei

Summary:

A practical, fun hot hatch

Faults:

Coolant system leaks and messages. Central locking issues.

General Comments:

This is the Polestar version of the V40 T4, 1.6. Tuned to 200+ HP, firmer suspension etc. Very quick, and in sports mode setting on the transmission, a beast. Of course it looks like any other boring V40 4 door, aside from the little blue badge on the back and a slightly throatier exhaust note. It catches a few out on the road when you leave them in your wake. Great fun to drive, but the firm ride is a bit uncomfortable on crappy potholed roads.
