"Buyer Beware Transmission Problems"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

My truck started not shifting right at 48,000 miles. Now the traction control light is on. The dealer told me I needed a Traction control sensor It's not covered under drive train warranty. Cost $2200.

Back brakes had to be changed 3 times already and tranny is still shifting rough.

General comments?

Really nice on the inside, but Mercury should recall the transmission or some of the parts on this vehicle. I would stay away from this vehicle.

I agree. There are some transmission issues with this vehicle definitely. My 2003 shifts rough, especially when down shifting at lower speeds. Ford said that's just the way it is with this transmission. I've also had multiple things changed on the transmission, which haven't fixed the rough shifting. (More in my review)

I have a 2005 Mountaineer that has given me absolutely no trouble whatsoever. I'm not thrilled with the gas mileage but that's what one expects with a large SUV. It's comfortable, roomy and good looking.

The mountaineers aren't the problem, it's the transmission, which is used in the Explorers also.

The main transmission problem was fixed in 2003 or after, can't remember.

So any problems you have may be related to DRIVER errors, not engaging gears properly, since these trannys are sensitive to how you engage gears.

NEVER engage gears while moving with this transmission, wait for a complete stop.

And I believe the V6 and V8's still use the same transmission, just different sized bellhousing.

I've beaten my Mountaineer up good and never had problems.

Threw some 31inch BFG Mud Terrains on there, Flowmaster 40, and a class 4 towing hitch.

The AWD system in the Mountaineers is EXCELLENT, since it's FULL TIME AWD, which means it doesn't wait for you to get stuck before engaging AWD.

So it's constantly in 4Wheel High (power is split %60 rear, %40 front at all times).

I've towed a fullsize van with 2 jetskis out of a sand pit!

I've taken it thru mud, deep sand, the bay, and even in deep snow, and this thing holds better than my old S-10 ZR2/SS 4x4!!!

Mountaineers actually have a near flawless record, with the occasional transmission problems, which is usually due to driver error, or possible defect.

I know people with 150k on their Mountys and NEVER replaced a thing yet.
