"Happy hunting... poor V8's.."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Engine developed a misfire on mild acceleration at 90000 km's. This required new platinum plugs and some high quality spiral ignition leads to fix.

Front sway bar ball joints very poor after 65000 km's, This required removal and tapping the back of ball joints to re-tension bushes.

Centre tail-shaft bearing worn out at 90000km's. This required removal of bearing, and sending to a bearing specialist who managed to source a generic part. This saved me nearly $400 Australian over the price of the genuine item.

General comments?

This is a very deceptive car. It manages to slay the performance of most V8 powered cars, and has the power to outrun a 2002 WRX between 30 to 140km/h.

My car has a bull-bar and fog lights and is shaped like a mini van. The police have no idea how fast it is.

I can fit a lot of gear with the sliding side door, and large adjustable boot area. The rear seat slides back and forward, and also folds out of the way.

The front seats are Recaro's and are extremely comfortable.

This car also has climate control airconditioning, adjustable everything, and very good driving vision.

Things I would suggest installing to make your living with this vehicle more enjoyable :-

3" exhaust with 2 straight through mufflers and most importantly a resonator. This will dramatically improve performance and fuel economy.

Cruise control if you travel long distances.

Tinted windows due to the extreme amount of glass area.

Good plugs and leads.

This is a genuine wolf in sheep's clothing, the Evo Lancer engine in a mini van. Get one to keep the wife happy, kids in plenty of room, and yourself awake with adrenaline.

Happy hunting... poor V8's...

I have an RVR 1998cc 1994 model. My mechanic said the bearings will need to be changed, where can I get some. I am in Zimbabwe, Southern Africa.

This one used to smoke a lot, and low power until I changed the diesel filter and the prime pump, now using a generic one.

This car is good, slow on picking speed, but covers up once in gear 2 - 3. Excellent handling on the road. The room is good, vision excellent, seats comfortable. Compass, dash color changer, CD front loader makes it just the car to drive, a real head turner.

Ok, 1994 sports gear turbo, 169kw top mount intercooler, td04 turbo.

Hypersport, larger TD05 turbo (easily changes with ssg TD04)

small front mount intercooler 185 kw and lots of spoilers, etc.

My ssg auto with 3 in exhaust gets 400 km to 45 liters on the highway - increasing the boost from 0.5 bar to 0.8 bar is lots of fun once the speed gets up!

Exhaust mod got me around 40 km extra per tank!

Exhaust manifold gasket is a pain, take it to someone good.

Ignition leads die around 100,000 km - easy D.I.Y. project

Engine has 2 timing belts - more expensive than usual

Be careful with air intake mods as the sensor is very sensitive to turbulence.

If I was more computer literate I would start a site as info on these is hard to find - luck all.

I have a 1997 Mitsubishi RVR Hyper Sports Gear Type R Manual. Living in Australia with our WRX obsession its so much fun to pull up at the lights next to a WRX with $1000's spent, and I smoke them with $800 mods. Exhaust and bleed valve! Problems so far at 110k include total failure of muffler baffles and some problems with the brakes. Other than that they are amazing cars.

Hi nobody responded to my comments on the fuel consuption of rvr sports gear. I have just recently acquired a rvr 1998 c.c. 2. l automatic and the fuel comumption seems to be bit high than I expected. I get arount 9-10 km / litre and in Fiji the fuel is $1.40 /litre. please advise if there are ways to increase the mileage on less fuel.

Suggestions email to gani@connect.com.fj.

Yes, 9-10kms/liter is quite good! Mine does about 7, but I have the turbo model. Installing a slightly larger exhaust will help with fuel economy, you might go to 2.25". At the end of the day, you are getting pretty good performance from a heavy people mover, and that power comes from simply burning more fuel. There's no a lot you can do about that.

I have a 1996 RVR SSG Turbo Auto. Its done 68000KM and occasionally it decides to change down gear at random and runs spasmodically in the mornings for about 10mins.It sometimes lacks instant response power when accelerating on the motorway, but it can run all day sometimes without a problem.

I have had it fully serviced and checked over, but they can't find a problem.

I am wondering if it is to do with damp in the computer or a sensor for the turbo as it seems to be fine after a few dry days. Can anybody shed any light as its getting very frustrating. PS does anybody know if these cars have a Fuzzy Logic Gearbox or are they just standard. N23WG Super Sports Gear.

Hi.

I live in Sydney Oz and am just about to purchase a 96 model rvr and just wondering who insures these vehicles as I have been turned down by 2 of the larger comapnies so far. Also am I buying a high maintenance vehicle as this is what it sounds like after reading your comments. Its done 90,000kms- should I expect to spend a lot on maintenance?

Thanks for your replies - daddyc34@hotmail.com.

I have a 95 Super Sports Gear RVR (2L Turbo, Auto). And Need Some Advice Please. Last week the water pump let go and the Motor Overheated. After much searching I got a replacement pump (CD Lancer), and installed it, I also did the timing belts at the same time (Marks Align Perfect). Now I have a misfire at idle, I have already changed the spark plugs & leads, and still a misfire. It is a little slower to begin moving, but runs perfect under acceleration. If anyone nows what the problem is or have some advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello to the person who said if he was more computer literate he'd start a website for the RVR.

I'm quite computer literate and I'm keen to start a site dedicated to the RVR.

I own a 1994 SSG manual that I bought recently and am slowly getting used to.

Please contact me at soyeb@btinternet.com and visit my website http://soyeb.homeip.net where pics of my cars are being uploaded.

I had a 1994 2l turbo diesel. I bought it with ~140 on the clock last year and apart from the front brakes wearing out (including the rotors) it was very reliably...

Until a few weeks ago, with 164 on the clock it dropped a cylinder and blew the exhaust manifold. I recover 10% of what I paid a year ago at a weaker. It was a lemon, but I think it was luck of the draw more than anything.

7-8 km per liter around town, as high as 11 on flat open roads. Heavy and underpowered. No fun, but handles well. You really notice the difference of an extra person in the car.

With the way prices are going, I advise a more economical car than an RVR. Unless you just love that sliding door.
