1999 Buick Riviera from North America - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Passenger door handle malfunctioned. It was replaced under warranty with no further complications.

General comments?

This is my first "large" car and first Amercian car. It is in a word fantastic. A super performing, uncompromisingly comfortable vehicle. It is not practical for families and the like.. but for the individual to enjoy every little or long trip to spread out in and have personal storage room it is superb. I absolutely love this car and it is very competitive with others of its features and quality. I traded in a 99 of the hot selling Acura TL for this car for comfort and performance. And despite the $4,000 loss and additional $10,000 to buy I am pleased as can be!

The reviewer paid $14,000 over and above the price of the Riviera when he traded in his Acura TL of the same year.

Kelly Blue Book value now for a 1999 Riviera: $10,885

Kelly Blue Book value now for a 1999 Acura TL: $15,620.

OOOPS!

Moral: Buy Japanese luxury cars new.

Buy American luxury cars (especially discontinued

models) USED because they depreciate like crazy.

Hello Prakash what you are looking for is called a Silver Arrow which was a special edition in the final run of 1999 Rivieras. Only a small number, something like 300 were made.

I have one in prestine condition with only 17,000 miles which I would sell for $3,000.

Oops, I meant $30,000.

I understand. I have a '97, and I love it. I take care of it, and it gives me no trouble at all. And what a car! it's got character, looks, and performance. Yeah, I went Japanese for a moment to please the wife, but the Riv. is the car I like--and BTW, I'm an old sports-car driver, MGs, Triumphs--it's true, the Riv. suspension could be, oh, 25% better--but a guy learns to drive the car the way it wants to be driven, and then--it performs.

We are talking about a CAR! The Riviera is a luxurious and powerful head-turner sport car. Remember those 454-4 barrel carb. engine... well that's even better! The morning I saw mine, (a 1999, bought in Nov. 2003) I just couldn't walk away without buying it... this is what a head-turner is. (That morning I drove my wife in town so that she didn't have to pay a 10$ parking fee!) This car is MINE... My new Silverado (Duramax) will have to sleep outside; the garage is for the Riv.

I have California 97 and it brings me a lot fun and I enjoy, how unusual it looks in our European (Czech) streets. I must say, I had no problems at all, the car is simply fantastic. I am the only one with this car in our Czech Republic (Jaromir Jagr, Dominik Hasek, Martina Navratilova, Ivan Lendl). Greetings to all...

Yeah, the Silver Arrow edition was a callback to the '63 concept car that became the Riviera, and they only made 200 of them, considering only 2,000 rivieras made it out the door due to demand in '99, your looking for the silver needle in a brass haystack. If you find the real deal it'll have a silver plate on the passengers side to the left of the glove box that says Silver Arrow #xxx-xxx and exterior badges on the front lower fender. Also, clear turn signal lights and headlights, along with extra chrome trim make the cars exterior notably different from other silver hued rivs'.

P.S. anyone in NC looking to start a Buick club near havelock, morehead, or new-bern leave a contact. I'm really hoping to start up a friendly, performance and tech oriented club for late model Buicks with the 3.8.

Hello my name is Jozef, and I have a riv. this is my first loaded car, I'm only 17 and my mom bought me a new s-10, and then we sold it, and shortly we bought the riv. of course my mom wanted to keep it, but my mother proceeded to let me have it. I am completely mind boggled, by what all this car does I haven't had any problems out of the car, and I believe as long as I drive and treat this car like my own child, the car will treat me like its parent. Everyone I show my car to are always just blown away, by what all it does. I would recommend this car for anyone, young, old, prime, what ever age this car is the best. Another reason this car isnt less than the best is i drove this car all the way from ILLINOIS to NEW MEXICO, yes WOW!

I've owned nothing but Buick Lesabre for the last 6 years. Last Friday I cruised the used car lot at my local buick dealership - love at first site. A 1999 riviera, navy blue with 78000 miles on it. I test-drove the car and determined the rotors needed cutting. Dealer replaced them as part of the purchase price. There were many little things that needed to be fixed, but they were all due to the previous owner's failure to provide this baby with proper preventitive maint. Now, I have her in tip-top shape and find reasons to "go into town" just to drive her. I'm 59 years old and this car makes me feel 18 again. Ron in northeast wisconsin.

I have a 1999 Riviera Silver arrow, I think it is number 85. It has about 120 miles on it, that is not a typo. It has been stored indoors since 1999. I started it yesterday.

If anyone has interest, please email me.

I've owned a 99 Riviera for the last couple of years. I bought it from a widowed lady who only used to to go to the supermarket and the golf club. It had less than 30,000 miles when I got it.

It definitely is a looker; however, it is beginning to nickel and dime me to death. First it was the passenger side electric window motor ($300 installed). Then the traction control bearings ($350). Next was the water pump and belts ($350).

Now the paint is peeling badly. It started on a spot in the rear trunk door with a dime sized spot that has now grown to a dinner plate size. I just noticed a small peel starting just in front of the sunroof.

Don't get me wrong, the car is a dream to drive. It has power to spare (it's turbo-charged) and the gas mileage is not too bad; however, this issue with the paint has me thinking about getting rid of it. It will probably need a full paint job and, no matter what, after market paint jobs always look crappy.

My wife loves the car, but I'm afraid it's a goner. Anybody out there with these issues?
