2001 Mitsubishi Pickup L 200 GLS 4WD doublecab from Israel - Comments

10th May 2003, 00:00

"Best option in this vehicle category"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Rear electric windows stick, especially when wet. The rubber seal was replaced under warranty, but the problem recurred. The dealer had no further solution other than spraying with silicone lubricant.

The muffler produced an irritating humming sound at around 70,000 KM and was replaced under warranty.

The speedometer needle became erratic and noisy at 90,000 KM. This was solved by replacing the speedometer cable.

General comments?

This is a very dependable and comfortable off and on-road truck.

The cabin is fairly spacey in front, but rather cramped in the back seat. The driving position is adequate and does not cause excessive discomfort on long trips. The interior noise level is similar to other Japanese pickups (meaning rather noisy).

Off-roading requires lifting the front by tensioning the front torsion bars. Adding after market under body protection plates is a good idea, since the factory original is weak and protects the engine only.

The standard original rear electric differential lock is excellent.

The first-low gear ratio is too high for adequate rock crawling.

The original Bridgestone tires and alloy rims are durable and provide adequate grip on and off road, but I will probably replace the tires soon with something better.

The engine (105 HP) is weak and the truck is now marketed with a 115 HP turbo diesel engine which is probably not sufficient either.

Fuel economy is 9.1 KM/Liter unloaded highway, and from there it deteriorates to about 5 Km/Liter off-road and fully loaded.

Since this report, I have totaled 170,000 km and have written a follow up report which can be found under Mitsubishi - L200.
