"Fast, fun, and reliable"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

We had a problem with the windshield glass warping a bit. We took it in and the dealer replaced it with no problems.

I went to open the door and pulled the door handle off. Apparently some of these cars just have weak handles. They replaced the handle and it's been fine.

General comments?

The only problems have been minor and the car runs great.

The only thing I'd change is to reduce the road noise a bit.

I'd buy another one, but they changed them and got rid of the AWD and Turbo for 2000. It's a pity, but I'll have to find a different car when I'm done with this one.

On my 1998 Bitsubishi Eclipse GST the drivers handle broke off today. I was told it was $50 for the part.. by a friend that just ordred one last week!. for his eclipse.. so that's 3 broken door handles so far.

Love my 1998, but both door handles broke off within 1 week of each other. Crazy... because I am not that strong. I called Mitsubishi customer care and they would not cover. I am sure there is a defect. I see this problem being reported all over the internet reviews. Dealership said it was $55 for the door handles and $200 to install. Annoying...

Both of my door handles also came off in my hand. It will take over one week to repair: 3 days to deliver parts + 1 day to paint + 1 day to dry paint + 2 day weekend + 1 day to install parts. Now I climb in through the trunk! I had to prepay for the parts. Additionally, I must find a paint and body-shop myself, bring the handles to them, and bring them back to the dealer for installation.

I like the car, but am unhappy with the service.

My car is seven years old, but I would expect better service, especially for a problem, that in my opinion is a defect. I understand that the problem is common.

Also, my paint fades on all of the fiberglass parts. I had the handles painted the first week I bought the car, now the ground effects have faded also. I know a garage would help, but it's not an option at work. Is there some sort of protective coating that would help?

I have been reading all about broken eclipse door handles mainly because mine just broke off. I think it is ridiculous what they charge just to install the part, compared to what it costs.

When my door handle broke off, the dealer told me it was not on a recall list because it wasn't considered a safety item. If I were in a car accident, and the police or fire fighter couldn't get my door open because the door handle broke off, would it then be considered a safety item?

I bought my 1998 eclipse in March of 2003 and in June 2003, my drivers door handle broke. I took it to the dealership and they said it would cost me $137 to fix it. I said no way and started crawling through the passenger side. Well in November 2003, my passenger door handle broke off. The dealership claims this is due to my "negligence". How is this due to my negligence when I'm not the only one that this has happened to? I'm really trying to get Mitsubishi to say this is a defect, because obviously it is, its just gonna take someone to really step up there and force them to call it that.

I own a 1998 eclipse and both of my door handles have fallen off! I was very gentile after the driver side door handle fell off and still the passenger side handle fell off. Why isn't there a recall if so many people have the same problem? I don't want to be trapped in my car if I get into an accident!

My son has a 1998 Mitsubishi eclipse rs. Same thing as all of you his door handle fell off the drivers side a year ago, to this day he has been crawling through the passenger side. That is getting pretty old and he has decided to get it fixed to the tune of $150.00 (part, labor, paint.) Guess it could be a lot worse, I'm just hoping the passenger side doesn't break.

Thanks

My daughter has a 1998 mitsubishi eclipse GST. Both of her door handles have broken off also. The dealership told us all we could get were white handles, they apparently no longer make black. Which is the color of her car. We had to

order handles for a Talon. The cost for both handles were

$163.13 and the labor cost would be $240.00! I just about passed out on the service department floor, well not really, but I wanted to! At a cost of over $400.00 for parts and labor I hope these handles will last until I can pay off the loan for them! Just kidding about the loan!

The door handle on the driver side of my 99' Mitsubishi eclipse just broke off yesterday. I didn't know that they're were so many people this happend to. I also don't want to pay to get fixed, if its more than likely going to break again. Hopefully some time soon somebody will complain loud enough to the right people and have this problem solved.

When will someone take the appropreate action to get this door handle defect called an recall. This is ridiculous that I have to pay over 400 Canadian (estimation from dealer) to get this problem fixed. Obviously I am not aggressive with the handles since this happeaned to so many people. RIDICULOUS!

P.S. The person above who stated that the dealer told him that this wasn't a saftey issue which is why it is not a recall. You are right, I bet this would be a saftey issue if a firefighter ripped the door handle right off trying to save the occupants inside.

One more thing, I love the car anyways :)

I have also had both of my handles break within 2 weeks of each other. Not happy. I paid $165 for new handles (which includes a 20% discount) not happy about that either. I would like to know if anyone has changed the handles themselves and can you walk me through how to do it. I really can't see spending big $$$ on having the dealership do it.

My door handle fell off too! I was just opening it and it came off in my hand! I though I was the only one too! Mine is a '98, there should definetly have been some kind of recall on the problem. It seems to happen a lot.
