"A good looking car that doesn't run."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I bought this car brand new in 1999. At first we absolutely loved it. It was roomy, looked great, and rode good. I was proud of the car. A few small things went wrong (see below), but that is to be expected. However, on 11/26/03, the engine blew! This car only has 88,000 miles on it. I was astounded that a car engine would blow at 88,000 miles, especially a car that cost me $22,000.00! After speaking with my mechanic, I found out this was not unusual. We live in a small town, and in the last couple of months, he's seen FOUR engines do the same thing. We bought a used motor from a salvage yard, and the owner told me that the price has gone up 135% THIS YEAR on the 2.7 liter Chrysler engine. He has sold over 15 of these engines since the beginning of this year. That is a lot for such a small area. I contacted the local Dodge dealer, who told me they had never heard of a problem like this. Yeah, right. Then, I contacted Daimler Chrysler in Michigan, who told me they had never heard of a problem like this. Yeah, right. As anyone can tell, just do a search on the Internet, and you will literally find HUNDREDS of cases where this has happened.

The windshield washer fluid pump never worked.

The driver's side window motor had to be replaced.

General comments?

Chrysler doesn't stand behind their products. As I said, I really liked this car at first. And if Chrysler had said, "Yeah, you're right. This motor has been having troubles, and we'll fix it for you.", then I would be happy to own another Chrysler product, because I would know they would stand behind it. But when they outright LIED and said they had never heard of this problem, that was too much for me! I will never own another Chrysler product.

My engine is ready to blow on my 1999 dodge 2.7 liter engine. the timing chain guides and idler are all shot...I only have 40,000. miles on this car and was hoping not to have to get a new car... my mechanic said it will cost $1200.00 to fix... but trade it in right away because he has repaired 2 that blew the motor again within 6 months... he also said Chrysler is well aware of this 1999 dodge problem... the dealer I called said he never heard of the problem either... what do we do?

I also have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7 liter engine that need to be replaced at 64,000 miles. I bought this car in 2002 with 37,000 miles on it, since then I have replaced the timing chain, water pump, cooling fan, lifters, starter, battery cables ect... and now I am looking to buy an engine, or hopefully rebuild?

The main problem is that I still owe over what the car is worth (Blue Book Value) I have contacted Chrysler and they will not fix the problem because I bought this car used at a Ford Dealership. I have also contacted the Ford Dealership that I bought the Intrepid from and they too will not do any repairs because it is a Chrysler product. I have heard about this problem from numerous 1999 Dodge Intrepid owners, Chrysler should do something about their error in the 2.7 liter engines that they have built.

About the only thing you can do is to tell your story. Tell it to anyone who will listen. If everyone, myself included, continues to tell others about the problems with these cars, the lack of cooperation and pure greed of this company we can at least be of help to others. I know of at least six friends who have been directed to this website to make the decision for themselves. Word of mouth has made many companies succeed, and fail.

I bought my 99 Dodge in 99 and starting 2000, it has been nothing, but trouble. The only window that rolls down is my driver one. The air condition went out and I was told by the mechanic that Dodge knows about this problem and to call them and that might save me some money. I called and they had never heard of any problem like that before. Now I am facing a new motor. The mechanic said if I get it fixed get rid of it asap. I think he might be right. I just hate it because it is the only car I have paid off without buying another one.

We have a 1999 intrepid that is just sitting in our driveway because it needs a new engine that we cannot afford, and the worst part is that we are still making car payments on it. Has anyone thought about getting together to form a class action suit? if so email me at jthomas76@sbcglobal.net.

My aunt just gave me a black 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The engine is also blown. The prices for a 2.7 liter engine is very high. Luckily I found some one to rebuild mine for 1500.00.

I also WAS a owner of a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. Until the engine blew at 73,000 miles. I still owe on it- I bought it used, and was hoping to drive it another 30,000 miles, at least. What a joke. I tried to trade it in, but, as a Dodge dealer told me "you see, it doesn't run- it's no good to us" A new engine was around $ 5,000. Used was $4300.

I contacted the local newspaper who told me I was screwed. "Dump the car-Chrysler won't stand behind their engine." Apparently they only guarantee them for 36,000 miles. Ralph Nader has written to the Chairperson of Chrysler asking for a recall -with no luck. This is common on 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2000 models. When I finally gave this car to charity (no one else wanted it) the operator asked me what was wrong with it. When I told her a blown engine, she replied "I couldn't tell you how many Intrepids we get with blown engines. HOW SAD... I am now part of a class action suit, since this poorly made product has set me back thousands of dollars.

I didn't realize until I did a search on 1999 Dodge Intrepid Repairs how many people are on the same boat as me. My engine died last week and I was told by the Dodge dealership and an independent mechanic that my car needs a new engine that will run me from $5200 - $6800, I owe us much on this car and the Kelly Blue Book is at least $3K o $4K lower; I now realize that there is no point in getting it fixed since another 2.7 liter engine is going to cause the same problems later on. So now I am stuck without a car, having to get a new car loan and have to continue paying on car that has cost me a lot of money in repairs through the years (check engine light, window repairs, transmission, and a host of other problems) --can somebody please give me information regarding a Class Action Lawsuit. Please e-mail me at aniflip@aol.com.

I greatly appreciate that this website is available to the public. Had I not read it, I would have been made a $7000 mistake. Being only 18 years old, that is a mistake I cannot afford. Thanks.

About two months ago, I bought a used 1999 Dodge Intrepid from a private seller at 107,000 miles. I wish I had read this page before I bought the car. It cost me 2000, and another 200-300 for title, some minor repairs, etc.

Now I'm worried that it will blow just like everyone else here has reported.

If anyone has any info or wants to comment on anything, feel free to e-mail me at mtdew120@yahoo.com.

May 2005.

I too have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid and had it for 5 months before it broke down. I still owe over 9000.00 and have taken it to three mechanics that said it is not worth fixing and did not want to mess with it and two mechanics that have tried to fix it but said it is one thing after another that needs to be replaced and is becoming costly. The mechanics have replaced a new timing chain, fuel pump, water pump, oil pump, cam sensor (cam sensor has been replaced three times with a new gear each time because it wears out the teeth from the gear) and it still not is running condition. It idols too hard and the engine goes dead- somehow or another it could be the fuel injectors, electric, or cam sensor and gear are not sync'd...I give up!

I own an 1999 Dodge Intrepid myself which I bought from an used car dealer ship, it had 53,000 miles and now it just got to 74,255 miles, the only bad things with it has been the rear right passenger window motor &a/c cooling fan blowing. The bad part is that the extended warranty that the dealer sold me said that those items are not covered.

The Dodge dealer close to me said the repairs would most likely run in the $800.00 area which of course I do not have.

I truly believe that if I had read this before buying it, I would have never done it in the first place.

If my engine is to blow, I hope it does before the warranty expires and I also hope that it is covered.

Another 1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 liter engine bites the dust. What is Chrysler going to do about this? Oh yea, I forgot they don't stand behind their product. That is why my dad's Ford and my GMC which are both older are still running! Long live GMC and Ford!!

I own a 2.7 1999 intrepid, bought brand new, is a frustration in my life eversince. Very same week 3 out 4 window glass rewinder malfunctioned & I was told by the dealer that you will find this problem with this particular car quiet often. Now it only 68,000 miles. A list of breakdowns of this came on to shoulder of which some them are as follows: A quart of engine oil to add every week in normal local driving (<200 mile).Engine overheating & I am scared it maybe ready to blow anytime. Uper water inlet replaced twice. Left cat. converter replaced. This week aircondition evaporator has been replaced (was down for months, ran me crazy, the cost to repair wasn't small money). The engine oilpan gasket was leaking badly & hasbeen replaced. I don't know what to expect again and I can't afford to buy any vehicle & certainly I will not get substantial pennies by trading this crap. This is an urgent message to Chrysler for them to review this issue.
