2001 Jeep Liberty limited from North America - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Broken valve spring at 62,000.

General comments?

My 2002 Jeep Liberty, has 62,000 miles. It has been serviced every 4000-5000 miles.

Few months ago I had the 60,000 miles maintenance done by the dealer. I was told everything is fine, Then last weekend, when I was driving on the freeway the engine light came on and started flashing, and the car stopped. I had it towed off the freeway offramp.

My mechanic informed me that I have a broken valve spring and no compression in cylinder number one, and maybe a damaged head or piston. It is still in the shop. He also told me that Jeep Liberty has this problem and it is not the first time he sees a Jeep with this problem, It is not normal for a car with a low mileage to have this problem.

If any other Jeep Liberty owners have had this problem please contact me.

Thanks.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your 2002 Jeep Liberty when the engine light came on, and blinking or started to ride rough?

I had the valve spring break and drop the valve last Friday. At 75K miles. I am awaiting word from Jeep now to see if they will cover it under warranty. The drive train warranty runs out at 70K. My Liberty is a 2004.

We have a Jeep Liberty 70,000 miles that I am being told by a mechanic it is also the valve spring, I guess this is a common factor for this model??? Did anyone get financial help from jeep? we do not have a warranty.

My wife's 2002 Jeep Liberty has 72,000 miles on it and the extended warranty just ran out, she was driving it home about a week ago when she heard a clanking noise and then the car cut off, turns out it was a broken valve and no compression in cy. number one, obviously there is some flaw in there design b/c this should not happen on a car with 72,000 miles. I have had a 1999 Mustang GT and almost every week raced it at the drag strip and have never had a problem like this and it had 140,000 miles on it. I will never buy another Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge car ever.

My 03 Liberty was just drove to the dealer 90k+ miles. It was running real rough and the engine light came on. I was told no compression in cyl #4. I sure hope this isn't what you all are reporting.

I bought a Jeep liberty limited for my wife last year. We were on a six hour car trip when we pulled over for something to eat. I was sitting in the Jeep and all the sudden there was a clanking noise and the entire vehicle began to jerk. Had it towed 100 miles and mechanic says it was the valve spring. Does this have a high percentage of reocurrence? I obviously do not want to keep fixing it.

This happened to me. My valve spring on cyl 1 broke at 103,000. I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty. When out on a cold morning and it was running rough. Felt like it was running off 3 cyl. It's in the shop now for a valve job estimated cost $1,150.

OBDII read misfire cyl one.

My '05 Liberty has 77,000 miles and the same thing happened in cylinder 4. For those who had this happen just past the warranty, did Chrysler provide any coverage? It's getting towed to the dealership as we speak and I'd like to know what my chances are.

As an update... Chrysler agreed to pay for the cost of the new engine >$5000, but I had to pay for the labor - $2200. The engine came with a 3yr/80k mile warranty. A lot more than I wanted to pay, but could have been worse.

I have a question to those of you who had valve springs as the culprit. When your jeep missed and set off the havoc, was it constant after the initial failure or was it intermittent? I have an 02 liberty with 109 thousand miles on it and it has had an problems missing on and off for a couple of weeks now. Usually when I am speeding up to pass will set it off and it will continue to miss and ride rough until I stop and turn the engine off and then restart. From there it rides just fine until it misses again. Any ideas what will set this off?

I had the same issue. No Compression in #4 valve. My '02 Liberty has 126k miles warranty expired. Very expensive to get fixed. The head had to be replaced. I'll never buy Chrysler again. I think it's a conspiracy.
