I am 17 and a 1995 Taurus gl is my first car. The tranny has been rebuilt twice before I purchaced it a few months ago. Since, I have had the tranny rebuilt with new lines and the whole deal. Soon it will need it again. It almost burns rubber on a slow normal and it sometimes slips or maxes out at between 30 and 50mph. The spedometer bounces back and forth like no other over 40mph. I have had 2 speeding tickets in my first 6 months of driving due to this. Also, the dashboard shakes like no other over 60mph. Don't get me started on overheating. I have had just about every problem there is with my first self purchased car. I cannot aford repair after repair just to self destruct! I have friends upon friends who have similar tranny problems with any year taurus/sable. My begining driving experience has been horrible. If I had a thousand thumbs they would all be pointing down for the Ford Taurus How on earth does ford continue to build a nightmare?

Tranny comments or recomendations? patrickpingpong@aol.com.

I had one of these as a brand new company car in 1995 and drove it til 1998 when I had a 1998 Crown Vic as a company car. As with any new car they are really nice and reliable when new. I had the big six and it handled and braked very well. I tacked on a lot of highway and city miles per day and it was extremely reliable just oil changes and filters every 5000 miles, brakes and tires. I never had a breakdown at times I dropped this one for maintenance and used a rental car for the day. I feel there should have been a center armrest. I drove this model a bit longer as I drove other salemans newer Tauruses and mine was nicer. I never had any overheating concerns, but again I did not have it at 100,000 miles or more. Not that this pertains, but the hp dropped when I went from a Crown Vic to a Marquis company car. With the same V8 motor the Marquis was almost anemic. The 95 Taurus was fun to drive, handled well and a lot of power. It ran great the day I turned it in. I think a lot of the reviews here you have to weigh in how they were serviced. Although not cars of my own........ they still had all filters, transmission included changed/flushed on a consistent basis. Keeping them well maintained including little things like watching the guages, warming them up properly etc.has paid dividends as I have had to depend on them daily to keep appts. and make a living.

I am an 18 year old. This was my first car and it rocks it - the 95 Ford Taurus GL 3.8L. It had 138,000 on it when I got it and it has 267,362 now, and I had to put a water pump and tem thing. Take care of a car it will last forever as my dad always said. He has been driving the same car for 10 years. Guess what it is? Ya, a 1997 Ford Taurus IDK. What the motor is. Maintenance is key. Don't have time - take it to get it done. Don't have time or money then sell your car and get a bike. That is a lot easier to maintain. There. I'm done.

I just picked up a 1995 Taurus GL with 39,000 miles on it for $1,800. It has $600 worth of brand new tires on it and was owned by a little old man who died earlier this year (his son works with my wife and sold me the car).

I bought this McCar as a commuter and will put about 10,000 miles on it a year. My mechanic friend says it should last about 100K miles until the tranny goes out. But, whenever it dies, I'll just give it away and find something else.

Reading all of the comments on this car has been amusing. I know what it's like to buy a POS brand new and have nothing but problems with it literally from day one (1998 Blazer). This Taurus never had any mechanical issues - yet. And, it was meticulously (almost obsessively) maintained. So, I couldn't pass up such a cheap car with so few miles on it. And, judging from your comments, I'm glad it only has the 3.0L engine.

So, thanks for your comments. And wish me luck. I think I'm going to need it. ;-)

I have had a 1994 Sable Sedan, a 1994 Sable Wagon, a 1995 Taurus Sedan and a 1996 Taurus Sedan.

I currently have the 95 Taurus and it's great. It's got about 180,000kms on it and it's running fine with no issue.

My Sable Sedan overheated because my wife drove it for a few months and never checked anything; it ended up leaking coolant (bad hose) and overheating, and the rest is history.

I sold my Sable wagon to get the 96 Taurus (big mistake) as both of my Sables were great cars and the Wagon was rare from what I can find, as it had full leather seats, 3rd jump seat, a power moonroof and a digital dashboard plus the other goodies. Never had any issues with it in the 210,000kms I owned it.

My 96 Taurus was a nightmare; it went through 2 transmissions in 3 years; no idea why, but I scrapped once it needed the 3rd one, plus it had other problems and it had the SOHC 3L V6 engine.

Now my 95 Taurus SE has the 3.8 and it runs great, no issues to complain about. I'm just replacing some age related things such as a muffler and brakes, but it's the first time I've had to do anything to the exhaust, and obviously brakes wear out every 60,000kms or so. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in.
